I have been inspired by the following image and wish to begin aquascaping a 2.5G aquarium in a similar way. I have a few questions, though.

1. Is it safe to use a ceramic tea cup set in an aquarium? I'm thinking of growing a moss carpet to surround the saucer, but planting other live aquatic flora inside the tea cup. The saucer would be filled with black stone substrate which is already in the tank.
2. I perform two partial water changes and one full water change per week with each of my tanks. I have two; the 2.5G in question with a hefty Plakat, and a 1G with a small lady Betta. Despite my research, I can't determine the best way to keep the water fish-safe in a tank this size (hardly anyone recommends cycling tanks this small). Would performing full tank water changes compromise the health of the plants in any way? What if I use a liquid fertilizer?
I still need to determine if I can replace the light source to make it more suitable for live plants, as I have a Mini-Bow that I'm rather happy with. This alone might prevent me from using live plants at all.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I'm still having such a hard time figuring anything out.
