Does Doctor Who fandom seem to be especially dead right now?

Mar 17, 2015 00:33

Is it just me, or does it seem like Doctor Who fandom is just not very active now? I know part of it is just that we're in the between-seasons slump, but it also seems like there's less involvement, and less anticipation or demand for it to hurry up and come back ( Read more... )

I don't think it is harshing anyone's squee to say what you think. You phrased it as how you feel. What harshes the squee is the people who talk about their opinions on the show as if they were fact.

Personlly, I liked 12. There were some weak episodes and some strong episodes, and it balanced pretty well for me. I'll always miss 11 because he was my favorite, but I do like 12 too.

If I might ask, what didn't you like about 11's regeneration story? Because there were parts I didn't like, but overall I did feel at least the regeneration part was a good way to end 11's tenure. His line was the best of the 3 regen lines so far for me anyway.

I don't want to dislike 12 -- and I can see myself liking him if the scripts would give me a break from the dark, bleak and obnoxious. While the Doctor can be a jerk, the core of the show should be optimistic and joyful - it must have a heart. I think S8 went astray on that point ( ... )

I agree with you on all your points. Well said.

I think it's all of that, the feeling that it's been done, now, and the new Doctor just might be the “jump the shark” point.

I certainly have been in a slump with respect to DW. Part of it has to do with my life becoming far more busy (somehow I got promoted at work without even knowing I had been), so I haven't had the time to think about it. However, I do think that if I had enjoyed Series 8, I'd still be exciting for Series 9 even if I didn't have time to do anything else pertaining to the show.

Personally, I enjoyed the Twelfth Doctor and felt that Peter Capaldi did a fantastic job. I did not enjoy the stories or the writing, to the point where every week, I was dreading watching the next episode, often putting it off many days (Mummy and Flatline were very pleasant surprises). This doesn't make me look forward to Series 9. I also hated Clara, and her non-departure at the end of the Christmas special sealed my disinterest in the next season. I'll watch it, but I'm not even thinking about when it might start broadcasting, and I'm content with watching the classic show and listening to the audios. “They have the sense of wonder and adventure, as well as the quality of
story, that made me fall in love with Doctor Who in the first place”

There, that's it exactly:  The same thing happened with Star Trek as Berman & Braga ground it down to where it was a mercy to finally take Enterprise out behind the chemical sheds and shoot it.  When “new” and “improved” stop being synonymous…  When fans abandon the present and return to past efforts to recapture what has been lost… Clearly something vital has indeed been lost.

I have felt the same, as if there was some lethargic, slightly unhappy quietus; I think that's sad, because we have no idea how the next season is going to turn out and, when I think of it that way, I get happily curious as to what's around the corner. But others don't seem to have that same feeling, and I think I understand that, even though it makes me sad.

I was unhappy with much of last season, despite loving more than a few of the episodes. There were some positives; I came to appreciate Clara far more as the season went on, and, on an intellectual level, I came to appreciate the way Danny was introduced, treated and sent to the exits. There were some emotional tugs for me as well, largely having to do with Clara.

And yet the whole was somehow less than the sum of its parts, and I felt that Capaldi was being held back, or mis-directed, told, perhaps that he needed to be dark, and taking that direction a little too much to heart.

And yet ... I want to see what the coming season holds!

My DW love has seriously waned since the start of S5, as has that of most of my corner of DW fandom. I could never warm to Eleven, though I tried hard, and as fans do when they lose their all-forgiving love for their favourite series, I started to see problems I would have overlooked before: inconsistent writing, plot holes, poor and inconsistent characterisation, recurring guests I couldn't stand. I stopped watching during S6 and only watched the second half of S7 to see whether a change of companion helped (it didn't much ( ... )
