Title: The Voice of an Angel
Pairing: Jongkey
Genre: Angst, romance
Rating: G
Word Count: 650
Summary: Two years have gone by.
“Already been two years, huh? Damn, does time fly. It seems like only yesterday I asked you out. But here we are, celebrating our two-year anniversary…” Jonghyun hauls out a prolonged sigh, tipping his head back and closing his eyes. A well-timed breeze wafts through the area and Jonghyun smiles, finding the refreshing smell of nature an appropriate scent for such a touching occasion.
“This speech sucks,” Jonghyun says with a mildly embarrassed laugh, and without even looking he can already imagine Kibum’s none-too-amused narrowed eyes, his suspicious frown and cocked hip.
“I didn’t really rehearse,” he mumbles under his breath, looking down, and he swears he hears Kibum laugh-a small giggle underneath the wind-which brings a lighthearted smile to his lips. “That’s why this is a little…well, awkward and not romantic.”
Jonghyun drops to a knee, taking another sigh. “I feel like I’m gonna throw up,” he voices his thoughts mindlessly, shuddering a little and chewing his lip. “But if I don’t say this now, I’ll regret it forever.” He shuts his eyes, letting his mind go blissfully blank before he blurts: “I want you to marry me. I really, really want you to marry me. We already bicker all the time anyway, so I thought, why not, you know?”
You’re an idiot, Jonghyun. Jonghyun hears the snarky but affectionate remark and a grin stretches his mouth, so far that tears spring to his eyes and it almost stings to be smiling that widely.
“Your idiot,” he drones, looking up at the tombstone and tracing the engraved words lovingly. It’s about the cheesiest thing he can think of to say, but that’s what makes it…well, him. Kibum secretly likes his mushiness, he’s sure of it (otherwise he would have been dumped by now).
He listens closely as he begins smoothing a thumb over the name Kim Kibum tenderly, as if it were the boy himself. He doesn’t hear an answer, to his dismay, and he pouts a little at that. He stands up again, breathing a sigh and placing his hands on his hips mulishly.
“Really? You’re gonna leave me hanging? I know I didn’t have a ring prepared, but isn’t the silent treatment a little harsh?” He feigns annoyance, rolling his eyes. “I swear, Kibum…” He stares at the grave for perhaps another ten seconds or so before squatting down again, replacing the dead flowers with fresh, healthy ones.
“There, all pretty for you. You always liked daisies. Such a girl,” he rolls his eyes again, fondly this time, chuckling a little. His smile fades gradually as he begins to read the carved letters imprinted on the front, even though there isn’t really a need to; he’s had it memorized since the day the tomb was lodged into the ground.

The Voice of an Angel
Jonghyun wholeheartedly agrees. Kibum’s voice is naturally melodic, rich yet nasally, the texture gorgeous and exclusive, just like the owner. And although he never sang professionally, he certainly could have had he wanted. Jonghyun knows that better than anyone else.
“Happy anniversary, baby,” Jonghyun whispers, just for Kibum to hear.
Yeah, it sounds like the wind whistles, and Jonghyun smiles, knowing what Kibum means.
“I miss you a lot, you know,” he throws over his shoulder just as he’s leaving, glaring intently at the grave. “You should come back home soon.”
Jonghyun has a feeling Kibum is calling him a moron right about now. With that thought in mind, he smiles, walking through the rest of the scarcely-cut grass to the parking lot, rubbing his now-clumping lashes and swiping up the moisture.
“I’m glad you agreed,” Jonghyun utters against the steering wheel, swallowing.
The silence that follows is thick, but not uncomfortable; Jonghyun feels Kibum’s mocking laugh that echoes through the interior, and then there’s that on-cue press of warmth against his cheek.
Yeah.
A/N: angst is not my forte, obviously. nevertheless, I've been incredibly sad lately, and to vent, this story was created. the saying "The Voice of an Angel" was carved onto my mother's tombstone. it's a special saying to me, so I decided to use it here. And no matter what anyone says, I, personally, think Kibum does have the voice of an angel. c':
and I also apologize because damn do I make jonghyun propose a lot. O T L forgive me ;;
