Summary: Akaya reunites with Shiraishi and realizes that perhaps it would be better to keep his options open.
Akaya stowed his fishing gear and headed back toward the beach. Luckily, he kept his pain meds with him all the time, just in case. Emerging from the tree line, he scanned the beach for any sign of Shiraishi.
Shiraishi told Yukari where he was going and headed along the beach. Kirihara was rather easy to spot and he waved his good arm, smiling. “Hey, there!”
Akaya turned at the sound of a voice. Seeing Shiraishi waving at him, he smiled and headed toward the other man. “Hey. Wow, you did get a bit crispy, didn’t you. There might still be some aloe in the medical cave if you want to go look for some. I can show you the way.”
“Thanks!” Shiraishi scratched his hair sheepishly. “I wasn’t expecting to be out in the sun so long. The whole trip really turned into a disaster!” He grinned. “You look good though! The sun hasn’t seemed to spurn you!”
Akaya smiled a little wider at the compliment. “Thanks. I guess I’m kind of immune to sunburns with how often I’m out in it. So did you get to see any dolphins at all before you hit that storm?”
Shiraishi’s smile fell. “No. I suppose the trip wasn’t even worth it.” He sighed. “No wonder Yukarin is so mad at me.” He idly checked Kirihara out, pleased he was still as attractive as ever. “You’ll have to get me out in the sun more so I don’t burn to death. Can I count on you to keep me busy?” He asked with a wink.
Akaya blushed lightly at Shiraishi’s wink. “That depends. Are you any good at fishing?”
Shiraishi smiled at the blush. “I’m not wonderful at it, but I don’t suck, either. Is fishing what you like to do to pass the time?”
“It helps keep the food stores from getting too low. I think Akutagawa-san is making a dehydrator or something so we can preserve stuff through storm season.” Akaya scratched the back of his head idly as he turned toward the caves.
“Ah...You really are very kind.” Shiraishi said, not a hint of sarcasm in his voice. “It’s nice that you worry so much about others.” His brows knitted together in worry. “Storm season...it’s already upon us, isn’t it?” He sighed as he followed toward the caves. “I can’t believe I got Yukarin into this...”
“It is, but it’s still early. We’ve been lucky so far, but I doubt it will last. And I’m sure your sister will forgive you. You’’re her big brother, she loves you regardless.” Akaya smiled a bit and did his best to reassure Shiraishi. He was beginning to feel a bit torn. It was so nice to be flirted with, but he still had Yagyuu and Niou to think about.
“I suppose so. After all, I forgave her for this already.” Shiraishi held up his bandaged arm. He smiled at Akaya. “You really are an angel, you know that? I was really feeling down before I came to see you. Bet you couldn’t tell, huh?” Shiraishi prided himself on seeming carefree in stressful situations.
Akaya’s blush flared again. “I-I’m not an angel. I just like looking after my friends and making sure they’re taken care of. I had to spend enough time as the one being taken care of, that it’s nice to take care of others instead. Is it out of line for me to ask what happened to your arm?”
Shiraishi chuckled at the blush, mentally thinking about how cute Kirihara was. “It’s not out of line. Yukari left some hair dye in the sink accidentally. I was experimenting with some chemical that accidentally caught on fire and when I tried to put the fire out in the sink....poof! It hit her hair dye and caught my whole arm on fire.” Re-telling the story, it was actually kind of funny. You know, besides the whole arm-being-scarred-and-damaged -for-life part.
Akaya gave Shiraishi a look of thinly veiled horror at the tale of how he had burned his arm. “My god, that had to hurt! Do you need to change the bandages or anything? I can try to help, if it’s not something you can do with one hand. I had to change the bandage on my ankle by myself several times, so I’m not very squeamish.”
Shiraishi smiled softly. “You know, it’s funny...at the time I didn’t feel anything. My whole body’s pain receptors shut down so I wouldn’t die from the pain.” He edged closer. “I would appreciate the help. Unfortunately, I’m left-handed, so while I could do it with one hand...it wouldn’t be very secure.”
“No problem. It’s best to tend to wounds like that properly so that they’ll heal well. Your arm is probably going to be scarred, but why give it a chance to be worse?” Akaya smiled reassuringly as they got closer to the caves. “Now I just have to remember which one to go in.”
“Hm? The caves are all different?” Shiraishi asked. “Is there a cave specifically for medical supplies or something?”
“I think so. I haven’t really been in the caves since we first arrived. And when we got here, I was in and out of it with a head injury. As far as I am aware, there is a cave specifically for the medical stuff. Tachibana An-chan was the nurse on the cruise, so she’s all set up and staying in there.” Akaya tilted his head to the side slightly as he stared at the different entrances.
“Tachibana An, hm?” Shiraishi hummed. “Well, if we don’t know which cave it is, maybe we should just guess.” He looked over at Kirihara and gently touched the top of his head. “You’re okay now, though, right?”
Akaya jolted ever so slightly at the hand touching his head. He hadn’t been expecting the warm touch, and it caught him a little off guard. “Y-yeah. I healed up just fine. There isn’t even a scar or anything from where the coffee table in my room cut me. I slipped on some water that was coming into my room and hit my head. But at least I was unconscious when we went through the hallway that was filled with spiders.”
Shiraishi kept his hand there, eyes looking pained. “Sounds like a harrowing ordeal. I’m sorry you had to go through that.”
“It’s alright. You didn’t make the cruise ship crash any more than I made your ship crash. And I survived without any long term trauma, so it’s all good.” Akaya smiled and leaned into the touch a bit. It was wonderful to have someone touch him so freely. Yagyuu barely would, and Niou even seemed hesitant most of the time, though he had gotten much more comfortable doing so. Mentally, Akaya was becoming very confused. ‘I like Yagyuu and Masaharu. Why is Shiraishi making me feel this way?’
Shiraishi smiled and ruffled Akaya’s hair a little. “I know, I know, but I grew a little attached to you at U-17, and I worry!” He laughed. “The thought of you getting hurt pains me.” While it was true that Shiraishi would flirt with anyone, he did like Akaya a little more than most. “Besides fishing, how have you been keeping yourself busy?”
Akaya’s smile turned wry at Shiraishi’s question. Finding a spot out of the shade, but not directly in front of the entrance to any of the caves, he sat down and gestured for the taller man to do the same. “Well, I’ve been trying for something that I really don’t think is going to happen. I thought I had found not one, but two people that I really cared about. I had even convinced them that the three of us could work, but I think I was wrong. One of them still won’t open up to me, and the other is just now learning to let people back in for the first time in seven years. And they’re so close to each other and so good together...that there doesn’t seem to be room for me. I’m trying to be patient, but I’m starting to lose faith that it’ll happen, you know?” Akaya blushed a bit and looked at the ground. “Sorry. I shouldn’t have just dumped all that on you. You just got here, you have your own concerns. I’m sorry.”
Shiraishi smiled sadly and patted Kirihara on the head. “Don’t be sorry. I’m flattered you were comfortable enough with me to want my help.” He was a little surprised that Kirihara was “involved” (for whatever that meant) with two people, but he could sympathize with feelings being unrequited. “And it’s probably been weighing on your mind a lot.” He just couldn’t take how sad Kirihara looked, and so, even though this was the first they had talked in several years, Shiraishi pulled Kirihara into a one-armed hug. “You’ve probably been so lonely. You don’t have to apologize.”
Akaya leaned into the hug without hesitation. “Have you ever hit the point in something where you feel like you should just cut your loses and call it good? Am I a terrible person for wanting to do that even though trying to be a threesome was my idea?”
“I know that feeling.” Shiraishi nodded. He had tried to seduce a certain someone, only to realize he would always be second-place. “I don’t see how you would be terrible. After all...at least they would still have each other. You’re the one who’s making the sacrifice, even though you clearly care for them.”
“It’s hard. It’s hard to want someone to be there with you when you know that you don’t have anyone because the ones you want are too busy being with each other. And I know I’ve got baggage in spades from my ex, and I’ve tried so hard to be patient, but I need to be happy too. Don’t I?” Akaya looked almost pathetic as he glanced up at Shiraishi.
Shiraishi smiled softly. “You shouldn’t settle for being second to anyone. The Kirihara Akaya I remember was always set on being number one. So you should be with someone who has you number one in their heart.” He rubbed Kirihara’s back and hummed. “You need someone who doesn’t want to erase your baggage, but can deal with the scars. Someone who loves you enough to know when they’re hurting you...” It was saddening to think that the cute kid from tennis camp had gone through so much.
Akaya managed a small smile as he leaned against Shiraishi. The blonde was providing more comfort than he’d had in months, and he was doing it so easily. “Thank you. For listening and everything. I really appreciate it, Shiraishi-san.”
Shiraishi smiled more. “I’m the type of guy that does better under stress if I’m worrying about someone else. And no one should have to feel lonely.” He idly let his good hand tangle in Kirihara’s hair a bit. “Besides, I had been curious about how you’ve been doing. I was being rather blase when I mentioned I had seen you a few times on TV. More like I made sure never to miss a match.”
Akaya blushed a bit as he tilted his head toward Shiraishi’s hand. “Really? I’m flattered. Knowing that you kept up on my progress in the pro world...it’s nice. No one else did that as far as I know. Not even my own team.”
Shiraishi frowned. “But you were so fun to watch play. And it was nice to see you still have the passion you did in middle school. I also got to brag to the girls at work that I played doubles with THE Kirihara Akaya back in middle school once.” He winked. “They were all so jealous.”
Akaya smiled a little wider as his cheeks darkened just a smidge. “You really bragged about me?”
“I did.” Shiraishi grinned. “They were even demanding proof.”
“Dare I ask what you gave them for that?” Shiraishi’s grin was infectious, and Akaya found himself feeling happier than he had for a while.
“Oh...some cell phone pictures I had saved on my computer.” Shiraishi said. “I always keep photos, even when I switch phones. I was really lucky that my teammates gave me some pictures from our match too.” He laughed a bit. “And now I sound like a stalker~!”
Akaya chuckled softly and shook his head. “I won’t hold it against you. I promise.”
“I’m grateful.” Shiraishi was happy to see Kirihara in good spirits. “You know...” He leaned closer so that his breath tickled Kirihara’s neck. “You’ve only gotten better-looking since middle school.”
Akaya blushed as a shiver ran down his spine. The feel of Shiraishi’s breath against his neck was stirring feelings that he had thought only Niou could elicit from him. “Y-yeah? You must not have had a mirror handy lately. You’re looking pretty amazing yourself.”
Shiriashi smirked. “Even being as red as a lobster? You’re sweet.” He played with one of Kirihara’s curls before resting a finger on the other man’s cheek. “But you better be careful of saying such sweet things.”
Akaya floundered for a moment before settling for just staring at Shiraishi. He knew his cheeks were likely as red as the other man’s entire body was, but he couldn’t help it. Shiraishi had always mystified him and left him feeling a little tongue tied, a skill he had clearly retained despite the years apart.
Shiraishi’s eyebrow quirked upwards and he smiled. “You don’t want to send mixed signals, ah? You compliment a flirt like me like that and you might get responses you don’t like.”
“If I knew which signals were the wrong ones to send, I’d stop sending them. I’m trying to decide if I’ve found someone to send the right ones to.” Akaya’s lips quirked up into a playful smirk despite the still present blush darkening his face and spreading to the tips of his ears.
“Oh..?” Shiraishi asked. “Do you think you’ve found someone? Indulge me a little, Akaya-kun.” Shiraishi smirked. If being playful made Kirihara smile, Shiraishi would provide the entertainment.
“Maybe. But he’d have to be willing to take it slow. I don’t want him to feel like he’s just a rebound, that’s not fair to either of us.” Akaya was still smiling, but his eyes had taken on a more serious glint as he looked at Shiraishi.
Shiraishi blinked. To think, he was just going to mention something along those lines was a bit startling. But then he smiled softly. “You’re absolutely right. It’s only fair.”
“I could be convinced to give him a chance to win me over. It would be nice to be the focus of someone’s attention without feeling like I have to fight for it.” Akaya’s smile softened a bit as well. Tilting his head down a bit, he looked up at Shiraishi through his lashes.
“It’s only what you deserve.” Shiriashi said, casually touching Kirihara’s cheek before resting a finger on the other’s lips, and then slowly retracting his hand. His smile turned sad. This was the first time he didn’t like his shameless habits. “...I hope you find what you deserve.” He tore his vision away to idly look at the caves.
Akaya’s face fell as Shiraishi looked away from him. “I think I will.” Biting his lip softly, Akaya carefully laid his head on Shiraishi’s shoulder. He didn’t want to put too much weight on the other man’s sunburn.
“...I’m a shameless flirt. I never mean much by it...but I’ve hurt a lot of people that were serious about me because of it.” Shiraishi admitted suddenly. “I don’t cheat, but apparently flirting is cheating enough.” He scratched the back of his head, smiling sadly. “Don’t fall for a flirt. We’re horrible people.”
“No, horrible people are the kind who abuse others. Whether they leave a mark that can be seen or not. Flirting isn’t so terrible compared to that. And maybe...you just need to find someone that makes you not want to be a shameless flirt. Or someone who can handle it because they know you enough to trust you.” Akaya’s voice was soft, but he didn’t pull away.
“A lot of people can say they handle it okay, but then get mad or hurt. And even if it’s not abuse, I don’t want to hurt anyone. That’s why I only flirt.” Shiraishi sighed. “...You’re a beautiful person, Akaya-kun. You deserve someone equally as beautiful.”
Akaya blushed again at the bald compliment. “My ex...he kept me living in fear of him even though I was stronger. I couldn’t turn to the police because he would hit himself and blame me, and I had no one I could trust to talk to because he made me believe that they all thought I was as stupid and useless as he did. Having someone who’s a flirt wouldn’t be so bad. Because I know that they would flirt with me as much as they would with other people.” It still wasn’t an easy thing to admit, but he trusted Shiraishi.
“Oh, Akaya...” Shiraishi dropped the honorific in exchange for hugging the other man tightly. “You aren’t stupid and you aren’t worthless. No one will ever say you are again.” It was a dumb thing to promise, but he made it all the same. He just sat there for a moment, taking this all in. It was a pretty heavy conversation to be having, with that was going on, and he didn’t want anyone to think he was taking advantage of Kirihara, but something about the other man pulled at his heart.
Akaya leaned into the hug, grateful for the contact. It took him a bit to find his voice, and it was scarcely a whisper when he did. "You're only the third person I've told. And even though your point is pretty much the same as theirs, I kind of believe you more."
“Why is that?” Shiraishi asked softly.
Akaya shrugged gently. "I'm not sure. Maybe it's because I don't feel like I'm walking on egg shells and having to be careful to not say the wrong thing around you."
“So you can relax and be yourself, huh? I’m flattered.” Shiraishi smiled. “I’m honestly glad to hear that.”
Akaya smiled back slightly. "I can. It's...refreshing. I might not be the impatient and demanding brat that I used to be, but talking to you makes me feel like my wants and needs are important. Not something to be shoved to the back burner so to speak."
Shiraishi sighed, casually rubbing Kirihara’s back some more. “Your needs and wants are important. If you feel like they’re being treated like they aren’t then you definitely are not in the right relationship. Remember.” He tapped Kirihara on the nose. “Kirihara Akaya should be number one. You keep telling yourself that because it’s true.”
"Hai, I will. You know, you give pretty great advice." Akaya's smile turned a bit softer. "I know this whole situation is screwed up beyond belief, but I'm glad you're here, Shiraishi-san."
Shiraishi smiled and went to pet Kirihara’s hair with his left hand, causing him to wince as he lifted it, the bandage coming undone. “Oh, yeah...I guess the bandage can’t wait another day. Akaya? Do you mind helping me out?”
Akaya shot up like someone had jabbed him. "Ah! I totally forgot about that! I'm so sorry, Shiraishi-san! Other than a lot of Aloe and a new bandage, what do you need? I'll go in and get it and bring it all back here so you can stay in the shade."
“Ah...some water? I’m parched.” Shiraishi answered, looking mildly embarrassed.
Akaya nodded and pulled a water bottles out of the bag sitting next to him. "Here. It's from a river here on the island, but I boiled it so it would be safe to drink. Are you in much pain?"
“Not much...” Shiraishi grinned, lying through his teeth. No reason to worry Akaya when he had so much going on. He took a bottle and downed it quickly. “Ah! Thanks, I needed that!”
Akaya smiled sheepishly and pulled out another. "Ok, but if you change your mind, it's in the left side pocket. I'll be right back." Akaya nodded and took off into the caves in search of the needed supplies.
Once Akaya was out of sight, Shiraishi took the painkillers out of the bag and popped some in his mouth. He winced, not only at the pain of his burns, but at the sick feeling of drinking too much water at once. He closed his eyes and hoped Kirihara would take a bit longer so he could drop the mask on being strong for more than a minute.
Once inside, it took Akaya a few moments to orient himself with the darkness of the caves. He was a bit embarrassed that it took several minutes to find the medical cave, but at least the aloe and bandages were easy to find. While he was there, Akaya grabbed a few pieces of fruit to take back with him before heading back toward the sunlight.
When Akaya didn’t come back right away, Shiraishi let himself feel the pain that was enveloping his body. He knew all of his nerves were sensitive and fried, but he hadn’t realized that ignoring the pain would make everything worse. He wrapped his good arm across his stomach, curled up into a semi-fetal position. He had almost forgotten he was even waiting for someone at all.
Akaya walked slowly as he came back, careful to not drop anything. As a result, he wasn't making much noise. Turning the corner toward the shady spot he had left Shiraishi in, he saw the blonde nearly doubled over in pain. Purposefully making sure his next several steps were loud enough, he returned to Shiraishi's side. "I brought some fruits in case you're hungry."
Shiraishi managed to lift up his head, pulling on a smile. “Fruit?” Why did his voice have to sound so raspy? “Yeah, fruit sounds good. Thanks, Akaya.” It was frustrating that he couldn’t pull the pained look off his face.
Akaya handed over one of the fruits he has brought before sitting on Shiraishi's left side. He hesitated a moment before reaching for the old bandages that was starting to come undone. "You're welcome. I'll take care of your arm while you eat, ok?"
Shiraishi nodded, taking one of the fruits and biting into it. He frowned a little, suddenly feeling self-conscious about the ugly burn that enveloped his arm.
Akaya slowly unwrapped the bandages. He didn't want to cause more pain or damage to the man sitting next to him. The scar was extensive, and an angry red to boot. "Do you want to wash it, or should I put some aloe on it?"
“We should probably wash it, huh?” Just the thought made Shiraishi wince. “I was out at sea for two days with no fresh water to spare on cleaning...”
"I don't think there's enough around here, but I know where we can get more. I have a little spot where I stay most of the time, and I've got quite a bit of clean water stashed there. Think you'll be ok for a bit of a walk? I can catch a fish or two I'd you want more than fruit while we're there." Akaya looked critically at the wound. In all honesty, between the burn on his ark and the extent of his sunburn, a dip in the river would probably not be a bad idea for Shiraishi.
“A walk? No problem!” Shiraishi grinned, his pain thinly veiled. He staggered to his feet. “Don’t worry about catching me food right now, though!” In all honesty, even the fruit was a bit to heavy for Shiraishi’s stomach at the moment.
Akaya saw the pain that Shiraishi was masking, but didn't comment on it. Stowing the medical supplies in his bag, he stepping around to the blond's right side before leading him out of the shade. "If you get tired, you can lean on me. The path is smooth and easy, so that should help."
Shiraishi grew a little stubborn. “I’ll be okay. Don’t worry about me, Akaya-kun!” He smiled, doing his best to keep pace with Kirihara as they headed down the path. He couldn’t go looking weak now. If he did, Yukari would start freaking out, and Kirihara wouldn’t find him dependable anymore...at least, that’s what he figured.
Akaya made sure to walk slow enough for Shiraishi to keep up. The walk took a good ten minutes, but the eventually reaches the edge of Akaya's clearing. The path they had taken was shorter than the one he'd originally used to find the place, but that was a good thing at the moment. Walking over to the blanket that was spread out on the ground, he pulled it to a spot with more shade. "Do you want to sit, or go soak in the river? The cold water would probably help your sunburn."
Shiraishi looked at the water. His sunburn was probably old enough now that going into water wouldn’t send him into shock. “Water...yeah...” He began stripping out of his clothes, folding them rather meticulously before setting them down on the blanket. He was amazed he had the strength to do it, honestly. He edged closer to the water, climbing in slowly. “...I should bring Yukarin here too.”
Akaya smiled as he stripped down to his shorts and put his feet in the water. "Just tell her that she's not my type first, please? I'm not very good at breaking that news to girls without them crying or hitting me for some reason."
“I’m telling you, she’ll be fine once she knows you’re gay. She’s kinda weird like that.” Shiraishi laughed. “She’s almost as bad as I am, honestly.” He laid back, enjoying the water. “Thanks for bringing me here...”
Akaya grinning at the sound of Shiraishi's laugh. "You're welcome. If you ever can't find me on the beach, I'll probably be here. And your sister sounds pretty cool. I just...get a little flustered when girls flirt with me because I never know how to responsible."
Shiraishi closed his eyes. “That’s just another thing that’s so cute about you.” He felt so weak, so keeping up the conversation was hard. “Best to just be honest.”
Akaya made an agreeing sound as he sat on the shore. He was keeping a careful eye on Shiraishi just in case. The tall blond was a good friend, and his looks weren't the only thing Akaya found attractive. 'He's funny and sweet, he values my opinions, he doesn't think I'm an idiot, and he makes me feel happy and important. Why couldn't I have run into him again years ago?'
Shiraishi smiled softly, noticing Akaya deep in thought. He lightly splashed at Kirihara, grinning. For such a caring guy, he could put on an energetic front. “Penny for your thoughts?”
Akaya's eyes snapped back into focus as he was splashed. Kicking a light spray of water back at Shiraishi, he chuckled. "Just wondering why I couldn't have run into you years ago. I had so much fun hanging out with you at the U-17 camp, I didn't realization how much I missed you."
It was Shiraishi’s turn to blush, his smile falling into a sad one. “Heh. I guess that’s just the way life is.”
Akaya bit his lip to keep from grinning too much. "You're pretty cute when you blush, you know?"
Shiraishi answered by submerging himself completely in the water to hide his embarrassment.
Akaya watched Shiraishi go under the water, ready to jump in if the blond didn't surface on his own.
Shiraishi stayed under for a good amount of time before coming up for air. He gasped a little, then looked back to Kirihara. “Cute people shouldn’t call other people cute.”
Akaya grinning in amusement. "What adjective would you prefer?"
“I am perfect.” Shiraishi said, attempting to strike a cocky pose in the water and just slipping, getting pulled under again.
Akaya felt a flash of panic as he watched Shiraishi slip. The pose- while it had lasted- had been quite amusing, but it didn't keep him from worrying.
Shiraishi flailed, having fallen at an angle that was too hard to regain his balance. It was obvious he was failing at the “being cool” goal he had set out for today...and now it looked like he was drowning, on top of it all.
Akaya had to force himself not to jump in the water to help Shiraishi. He knew the other man was capable of taking care of himself, and didn't want to insults that ability. Raising an eyebrow, he did his best to stay calm. "Are you gonna be ok?"
Shiraishi managed to grab onto the shore and pull himself up, gasping and coughing. Thoroughly embarrassed, the frustrations on the day weighed down on him and he laid, his body half out of the water. He bit his lip to stop the damn tears that decided to start.
Akaya frowned to himself before moving to pick Shiraishi up by his good arm. Carrying the man over to the blanket, he waited for the blond to get settled before sitting next to him. "There. Now your sunburned won't get worse. I don't know how to treat sun poisoning. Once your ARM dries, I'll pit aloe in it and wrap it so you can rest."
Shiraishi nodded, wondering if what he heard in Kirihara’s voice was disappointment. He couldn’t be sure, but he knew he would be disappointed in seeing himself act so stupid. He took a deep, wavering breath as he sat there. “...I’m sorry to be a hassle, Akaya-kun.”
Akaya gave Shiraishi a look of mild confusion. You're not being a hassle. That pose was actually pretty funny until you slipped. I just...it sounds like you work so hard to look after your sister, and you need someone to look after you. And I volunteer myself."
Shiraishi smiled, still a little embarrassed. “How could you not call yourself an angel, saying things like that?”
Akaya blushed and looked back at the water quickly. "I-I'm not an angel. I'm a devil, haven't you heard? I just like taking care of my friends and the people who matter to me."
Shiraishi sighed. “Okay.” He didn’t want to embarrass Akaya anymore. “I just think you’re kinder than people give you credit for. You don’t have to take care of me...but you are.” The tension in the air left Shiraishi feeling like he was saying all the wrong things.
Akaya smiled brightly back at Shiraishi. "No offense to your old teammates, but I wasn't about to entrust you to the Turtle Queen. And outside of the Ned students, all of whom are distracted by their old doubles partners, there isn't anyone I would trust with medical stuff." Akaya's blush flared again, though his smile didn't fade. "You're also the first person who didn't make fun of my hair."
“Turtle Queen...Why do I have a feeling that’s Chitose?” Shiraishi laughed at the absurdity of it all. “And I’m sure the medical staff are all really reliable.” He reached out and ruffled Kirihara’s hair. “And why would I make fun of this beautiful hair? I like it the way it is!”
"If Chitose is the hippie, then yes." Akaya was torn between blushing and preening at the hand in his hair. "I don't know. I never understood why anyone else teased me for it either."
“Bad taste, I guess.” Shiraishi shrugged. Shiraishi smiled and let himself slump against Kirihara. “It feels nice...not being afraid. I’ve spent the last two or three days thinking I was going to die.”
Akaya wrapped an arm around Shiraishi. "It's ok. You're as safe as the rest of us now. There's food, water, and shelter here, even I'd a lot of people are getting anxious for a rescue."
Shiraishi nodded. “I worry more about Yukarin. It really is all my fault she’s here. I’m the one that wanted to see the dolphins. She even had my meds packed with her...she’s such a great little sister...”
"I'm sure that no one will give her too hard of a time. It might be hard for her to be one of only two girls on the entire island, but I doubt she'll stay mad at you. You two seem really close." Akaya almost felt a bit of envy. He had an older sister, but they had never been very close to each other.
“I’m a bit of a smothering older brother.” Shiraishi chuckled. “I’m her idiot older brother. She can’t stand me.” He sighed. “Which is what all younger siblings say, I’m sure.” He lifted his arm. “I think this is dry now.”
Akaya gave Shiraishi's arm a critical look before nodding. Pulling out the aloe, he began carefully applying it to the burn. "I don't know if I've ever said that about my sister, but we were never very close growing up."
“I’m sorry to hear that.” Shiraishi said, wincing a little at the aloe. “I guess I get clingy to everyone I care about.”
"That's not always a bad thing." Akaya smiled and tried to make his touch even lighter. "Tell me if I'm hurting you, ok?"
Shiraishi nodded. “It stings a little, but there is nothing to be done about that.” He said honestly. “Thank you for taking care of me.”
"You're welcome. You're a good patient, too." Akaya used some of the extra aloe to get the worst of the sunburn that he could see. The tops if Shiraishi's shoulders, feet, and thighs, his ears, even the end of his nose. By the time he was done, there was no aloe left on his hands and he could pick up the bandage.
Shiraishi seemed to be at ease with the touching, grateful for the cooling sensation it brought. “I try...” He said. “Of course...maybe it’s just because I have a good “doctor”.”
Akaya smiled and chuckled softly as he started wrapping the bandage. "Pity I left my white coat and stethoscope on the other island."
Shiraishi chuckled. “I bet you would look hot dressed like a doctor.” He teased lightly, even though it wasn’t a lie.
Akaya paused for a moment at that before grinning. "I don't know. I've never had a reason to dress the part before."
“We’ll have to find out sometime.” Shiraishi grinned. When Kirihara was done with the bandage, he flexed his hand a little. “Much better. Thank you, Akaya.”
Akaya nodded happily. "You're welcome. I'm glad I did it right for you. Arms are just a little different than ankles, after all."
Shiraishi nodded. “I’ll have to give you a reward for being so helpful.”
"What kind of reward?" Akaya cocked his head to the side not unlike an inquisitive puppy.
Shiraishi smiled softly, thinking that Kirihara was just too cute. He leaned in and gave Kirihara the briefest, most innocent peck on the lips before winking at the other man. “Your reward.”
Akaya's eyes widened as his face turned red. Bringing one hand up to his lips, he smiled almost shyly. "...Good reward..."
Shiraishi grinned. “Keep earning them, okay?”
"Hai! I will." Akaya nodded firmly as his smile grew a little.
“And Akaya?”
"Yeah?"
“I’m a patient guy. I’ll wait as long as you need me to, but I just wanted you to know that if either of the guys you're currently with tries to guilt you out of how you’re feeling, I will have words to say to them.” Shiraishi’s eyes looked serious and dark.
Akaya nodded, feeling a little speechless. "I...thank you, Shiraishi-san. That means...a lot more than I can say."
Shiraishi flashed a stunning smile. “Call me Kuranosuke, okay? Or just Kura if you want.”
Akaya couldn't help smiling back at him. "Alright then, Kura."
Shiraishi hummed a little. “As much as I would hate to leave you now...I’m sure Yukarin is getting worried.”
"Ah, probably. I'll take you back to the beach and see if I can help you two find some shelter." Akaya nodded and pushed himself up before offering a hand to Shiraishi.
Shiraishi took the hand and hoisted himself up to his feet. The walk back involved Shiraishi falling into a comfortable silence, happily walking beside Kirihara.
