I got a call at midnight from my ex - our younger cat, Halloween, has been very sick. He was diagnosed with lymphoma last week, and tonight he started vomiting large amounts of blood. She called to let me know that it was time to put him to sleep, and to give me one more chance to talk to him before he was gone. He didn't meow back at me, or give any other vocal response, but she said he was looking at the phone very intently.
She called me back at 1:30 to let me know that he was gone. He didn't whine or yowl all the way to the vet, and while he was on the table, waiting, she stroked his fur, and he purred. I think he was in a lot of pain, and I think he knew it was going to end.
When I first moved in with
dragons_tear24, we didn't know what would happen with the cats. I was allergic, but we were hopeful that between pills and careful dander control, I would manage. Not only did we manage, but I very quickly came to love "da boyz". Hal in particular attached himself to me very quickly. They were her cats, but Hal was my boy. When I went on a business trip for the first time, he waited by the door of our apartment for me. Every time someone came down the hall, he'd rush to the door, expecting me to walk in. It got to the point where he knew the sound of my keys jingling as I walked towards the door. He would lie with me when I was sick, or depressed, and let me cuddle him.
He also nearly clawed my eye open before our honeymoon, but I never blamed him for it - it was my fault for being stupid, when he was giving me every possible signal that I needed to put him down. He knew when he was done with something, and he did his best to make sure you knew it too.
I thought there was going to be more time. I wanted to set up a video chat so he could hear and see me. And I hoped to visit on my way to Boston when I make my move back out there. But it just wasn't meant to be.
I haven't seen Hal since September, when he and his brother moved away with their mommy. The house has been too quiet ever since.
Goodbye Halloween. I love you, baby boy.
