Afro Samurai: Resurrection

In an effort to keep myself more productive, and make better use of my journal. I've decided to do what the vast majority of LJers do, which is to post my own thoughts of games and movies, that nobody gives a damn what I think about.

I bought Afro Samurai: Resurrection the other day. Honestly, I was really excited, I had rather enjoyed the previous film, so I wanted to see how the sequel was.

Afro Samurai: Resurrection does have a lot going for it, with some impressive visuals and slick animation, not to mention packing the voice talent of Samuel L. Jackson, Lucy Lu, and Mark Hamil. Not to mention the meshing of Hip-Hop culture with Japanese Theme is unique, to say the least. However, despite the pretty visuals and good voice work, AS:R isn't a very good movie.

The sequel takes place a number of years after the first, with Afro leaving his life of hermitage to get back the Number One Headband that was stolen from him by an evil villainess, which the movie takes way too much time focusing on her cleavage and mini-skirt clad butt.

Seriously, the amount of T&A in this movie ridiculous, the original had a good deal of it too, but Resurrection decided it needed 10 times the amount of butt and cleavage shots. Hell, the villainess herself practically screams fan service as she prances around in a miniskirt and a blouse that's neckline extends to her navel. Let's not forget the scenes that take place in a strip club, or Mardi Grai-esque parade, complete with people screwing in alleyways. Don't mean to sound like a prude, but I'm getting annoyed with guy movies, and I'm starting to find them offensive, like the only way you think I'd be able to enjoy a movie, is if you throw in buckets of blood with heaping shots of tits and ass, but I digress.

Speaking of buckets of blood, the action scenes are pretty impressive, Afro makes for a fun watch as he gallivants across the screen, his huge afro whipping about, while he turns hordes of henchmen into coldcuts. Though I can't help but feel the fights are subpar in comparison to the previous film. While some of them are truly impressive, it just doesn't match against Afro's fight with his android duplicate, or his first fight with Jinno. Even the final villain isn't that impressive, while he does look visually awesome, he just doesn't stack up against Justice (though, Justice was voiced by Ron Perlman, which shoots up his badass points by 50.)

Also, I was annoyed at not just how Okiku was fridged in the first movie, but seemingly went into non-existence in the second. She's never mentioned through-out the whole film (despite the fact that Jinno and his other sister, Sio is there.)

Over all, Afro Samurai: Resurrection is an average flick. It's pure guy film, and while packs lots of style, it lacks any form of substance. Give it a watch if you want to admire the nice animation, but beyond that. Meh.
