Alyssa's 23rd with karaoke at Cato's

Last Friday, my high hopes for good times with friends were smashed when the actual event fell short of said hopes.

Last night, for Alyssa's 23rd birthday, I went in expecting the worst and came out with unexpected though extremely pleasant results. I bought Alyssa an Oaklandish shirt, the Oaklandish tree made up of BART routes. She loved it.

There was karaoke - some great performers, a few drunken ones, too many off-key ones but all were fun and deserving of applause. Tobie and I sang an epic rendition of Journey's Don't Stop Believin' and stole the dance floor during Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer. Alicia and I did a great dance number to Madonna's Like a Prayer. A woman joined me for Jimmy Buffet's Escape (the Pina Colada song). Several pitchers of beer and hard cider later, I spent the night at Tobie's.

It was a really great birthday and farewell get together for Alyssa. She'll be leaving for Scotland in a few days. We've all renewed our promises to stay in touch.

friends, life, hella gay
