Health insurance / vision coverage / all of that crap is really, really expensive. I never realized how much I appreciated my parents taking care of that stuff until I've had to start paying for it myself. And being that vision isn't covered at all with our benefits plan at work (isn't that fantastic?!), I'm having to pay a lot of this crap out of pocket. Nonetheless, it will mean new and sexy glasses come a week from now. Glasses I'll be cleared to wear on the air... and they aren't really round and oval, either (like the glasses that make me look completely homosexual, Debs! Hah! Ask me if you don't get the reference).
But an eye appointment costs $193, glasses cost $306 with the anti-reflective coating, on top of the fees for contacts... which I'm considering cancelling for the time being. Do I really need contacts? It depends. It's really a matter of, would they make me look that much better on the air versus the incredibly sexy glasses that I got today? It's something I'm going to have to think a lot about. I don't think I can afford another $500 in doctors appointments and contacts right now, particularly if none of it is covered. Sigh. What to do. Maybe I'll ask you all in a few days and take a few pictures. I think they look good.
I've been getting a lot faster at writing these stories for the news (not to mention editing them). For the goats story, I was in Holley (near Sweet Home) for about... 2 hours, shooting all of the stuff with a bunch of really poor and crappy equipment. I was back in Eugene around 1:30, ate lunch until 2:00pm, then got back and finished writing before 4:00pm. Rick helped me out ever so slightly with the writing, then I edited like mad for my airtime, which was 6:30pm. I cleaned up and looked AWFUL on the air at 6:30, but everything turned out just fine and dandy. Mary, any suggestions on how I can look... well, a little less disgusting on the air in the newsroom camera? Don't I look disgusting? :-) Nonetheless, I love the fact that I'm able to crank this stuff out quickly now. I'm starting to write with soundbites in mind rather than trying to take control with my own voice-over dialogue. And that means less reporter, more storytelling.
Anyway, I love the job. It's a blast. The people can be a pain every now and then (nobody that's on the air), but we have a new news director who's incredibly enthusiastic about getting good stories and putting them on the air. He's a nice guy, youngish (36), and he respects the reporters. It's just awesome, and there's a new energy in the newsroom that's really, really positive. I'm so thankful!
As for t3h Sarah? She's gone for the weekend, so no cheelin' together. If anybody would like to make a trip to Eugene, I wouldn't be against that. Hint, hint ;-).
Beyond all of that, I'm just listening to some good ol' Citizen Cope. Beautiful music. Sipping my starfucks (oops), and keeping it real. Love you all.
