The good and bad of raw

Dec 06, 2008 22:26

I can see why a lot of people consider raw foods a kind of fad or gimmick. I was looking on YouTube for some decent videos and I did find some really good ones by amateur folks making just sharing what they've learned. There are also some professional raw chefs that have some decent info.

Then, there's this kind of shit:

This is the doucheist fucking thing I've seen in a long time. Some vacant-eyed Fabio wannabe with copy that sounds like a really bad infomercial. If you took both Ben Stiller's and Owen Wilson's characters from Zoolander and put them together, it's this guy.

If this was the first thing I saw about raw foods, I'd never think twice about it. I would run far, far away. How embarrassing. A fucking raw concert? A seminar that looks like it came out of Requiem for a Dream or Donnie Darko? This looks like it was aimed at vacuous yuppies who want a miracle cure.

Raw foods will alleviate a vast amount of serious problems, including diabetes, but for fucks sake, it won't make you forever 22 or cure you of cancer. They make it sound like you'll never have a problem again. I hate that kind of false marketing, especially for something that actually does do some good.

On the other hand, there are some excellent videos, like this one:

The dude is genuine, real, and has a great series of informative videos as well as a decent blog. No bullshit or false promises. If he can lose 126lbs, then I can shed the 100 lbs I need to lose. I've seen videos of folks who were morbidly obese and now look very fit. Plus, diabetes runs in my family and I'd like to prevent it from popping up.

The first time I went raw, I did it for 3 weeks and had the following improvements:

Eyesight less blurry
WAY more energy, feeling like I wanted to start running just for the feeling of it.
Face thinned out and some fat loss
Not sluggish or tired at all anymore
Felt stronger overall
puffy calves and ankles went away
blood flow improved ( if ya know what I mean )
vastly improved mood
way more confidence

So, with all that good stuff, why did I stop? Addiction is a bitch. I am addicted to pizza, burritos, steak, hamburgers, breads, pasta, etc. They give me a short term euphoric feeling and then leave me feeling like crap. It's like a heroin or meth addiction. Addiction is addiciton, whatever the substance.

The key is to manage your energy intentionally through paying attention to how your body feels and what it's looking for. Don't just eat something because it's raw. If you're feeling lightheaded and flighty, don't eat more fruit, eat an avocado and some greens. If you're feeling like you could use a bit more energy, then go for the fruit. Eat what you need. That helps keep the cravings at bay.
