My best friend came over for dinner tonight. I cooked, we shared some wine and talked. Some time between letting dinner settle enough to make room for dessert and actual dessert, she picked up a magazine I had on my kitchen table. There's an interview with Jake in it and it still was on the table after I'd read the interview over dinner last night. She picked it up and admitted that she'd never seen Brokeback Mountain. Which I knew. But there was something in her voice that made me say, "Look, I have it on DVD. If you wanna stick around after coffee and dessert to watch the movie, you're more than welcome. Just say so."
Which - to my surprise - she did.
I'm talking about
this friend.
Over dessert, she explained that she believes everybody should live their life. At the same time, she admitted to not knowing how to react to PDAs, etc. between gay people because this is something she has never really seen a lot before. I can live with that because ultimately, she can get used to it and she can get over her own fears and insecurities.
We watched the movie and I glanced in her direction a few times (tent scenes, the kiss, etc.) and she seemed fine with all those scenes. At the end, she said what a beautiful film it was. Which pretty much warmed me up from the inside. I love BBM and I love my friends loving it. Before she went home, she asked if she could borrow Milk, which I gave to her.
Looking back at my other post, I believe I misinterpreted her initial reaction and that I misunderstood her - what I believed to be - dismissal of "gay movie, gay movie and Inside Man". Maybe, her reaction was her way of saying "I'm intrigued by these movies, but I don't know how to put it." Only I got it wrong.
I'm glad I apparently did.
