Cochlear Implant Evaluation

Dec 14, 2010 16:24

I just spent most of the day at the hospital where I had an evaluation to see if I'd be a candidate for a cochlear implant in my left ear. The good news is that seems I am. I got some more information on the implant and the surgery, talked to the surgeon (had to wait almost two hours to talk to him for two minutes), then had a CT Scan. I ( Read more... )

That would be too bad about Reno, but good news that you could do the surgery. :)

Thanks Martha! I'm hoping the implant will help. :)

Canceling Reno isn't a 100% possibility just yet, but there will be very little leeway in taking vacation time.

Well I'm glad you are getting the information you need. But you had to wait 2 hours to speak to the doctor? So not cool. I hope he had a good excuse, like an emergency surgery or something like that. Is there another doctor you can speak with to get a second opinion? Always good to learn as much as you can.

Anyway, lots of good thoughts being sent your way as you work out what is best to do.

Thanks LadyN!

The hospital is the one at the U of I so it's a huge research hospital and it's been rather notorious in the past for long wait times and average service. Though I understand they're trying to do better at that stuff. I thought about maybe trying somewhere else, but I'm not sure there would be any other local that would do such a specialized surgery. And on the other hand, the surgeon in question did the very first cochlear implant in the whole country and I believe he helped to develop the device. I was told a few times that he's pretty much the one you'd want to do this operation.
