You've already summarized pretty much all of my sentiments perfectly in your entry, for example, I felt cheated out of the Eve storyline as well. I mean, I guess I get what they were doing, trying to divert our attention from the whole soul thing and Cas' storyline, but. It felt kind of too easy. :|
Cas was breaking my heart in this episode. I've noticed the waver in his voice as well, not to speak of his all-around broken demeanour, his eyes. And, gosh, the last shot of Cas in the diner! *heart clutch

Bottom line? I'm absolutely not blaming Cas for anything he does/he's done. :| - I'm with you there. We've got his back ;)
Not just the subtext, but even the text is gone, with Balthazar making declarations of love on their behalf. And Dean and Cas are so "old married couple".
