This most excellent meme taken from
aurora_novarum, who was kind enough to give me a “B”.

2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ.
I’ve been trying to think of how I’m going to pick only 5 characters. There’s so many good B’s to choose from!
1) Buffy (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - Starting with the obvious here. I didn’t care for her or about her until the fifth season. I know that’s kind of a weird thing to say when I’ve become so invested in finally finishing viewing this damn show and its spin-off but it’s true. She wasn’t interesting to me in high school and it was only once the college years started that I began to think I might like her.
2) Bombadil (Lord of the Rings) - There’s something just so compelling about Tom Bombadil. I can’t even put my finger on it. Each time I reread LotR I find a new tidbit about him. He’s mentioned throughout the saga; both Treebeard and Gandalf make plans to go visit him, though I suspect only the latter will actually follow through. Even though there’s no evidence to support it, I hold with the faction that believes he’s the Valar that created the Dwarves and he’s stayed behind on Middle Earth to watch as his creation grows.
3) Bender (Futurama) - I love me some alcoholic robots! Our car’s last name is Rodriguez as an homage to Bender Bending Rodriguez’s Hecho en Mexico heritage. Bite my shiny metal ass, meatbags!
4) Boba Fett (Star Wars) - Who doesn’t love Boba Fett?! I mean, there’s a reason he was in the Christmas Special. He’s just so cool. He’s got the great one-liners like “He’s no good to me dead.” He’s got the awesome battle-scarred armor, complete with a single shoulder cape. And Slave II! But the thing is, I love Boba Fett even more now that I’ve seen him as a little kid. He really is perfect in Clones; his delivery of “Dad, Taun We’s here” is just the right mix of insolent and obedient. His glee when firing Slave I’s weapons at Obi-Wan is palpable. And his grim determination when finding his dad’s helmet, post Mace Windu beheading (is the head still in there?) gives you so much insight into his character, without ruining it with too much backstory.
5) Bailar Crais (Farscape) - I don’t want to say too much since I’d hate to risk spoiling
nqllisi on his arc but I love him. I think he’s totally hot in the first season when he’s got the crazy hair and he’s just utterly bent on destroying Crichton. I think his depth is wonderful as he joins Talyn and becomes an ally, if not exactly a friend. He can be trusted, despite being out for himself, because he hides nothing about his character. It’s all out there if you care to pay attention. As a corollary there’s also Braca. Braca and DS9’s Damar are my favorite ever tertiary characters to end up with solid development and real arcs.
6) Bashir (Deep Space Nine) - Who actually liked Julian right out of the gate? And yet by the end of DS9’s run his friendships with both Miles O’Brien and Garak the “simple tailor” were truly sublime and honest and real and utterly believable. His character underwent some twists and turns, some requiring a bit of suspension of disbelief to retcon (genetic engineering) and some fitting in so perfectly it’s hard to believe they weren’t planned ahead (shapeshifter replacement).
7) Bester (Babylon 5) - No one knew that Walter Koenig could do more than scream like a girl. And along comes Bester. One of the most evil and heartless bastards I’ve ever come to gleefully love and respect. His agenda is his own and he is ruthless in following it to fruition. I feel no sorrow for his personal losses and yet still enjoy seeing him fuck with everyone on the station. His manipulation of Garibaldi is one of the most astounding plots I’ve seen in any serialized television.
8) Little Bill (Boogie Nights) - Forgive me but I just wanted to include someone from my favorite movie in here. And Bill certainly does have a compelling and tragic story. His suicide is never not brutal and I love that Jack has Jessie’s crappy portrait of him hanging up at the end of the movie. William H. Macy is an amazing actor and takes the role and imbues the character with every bit of honor and sadness that is needed. He believes in his work and he’s a Romantic at heart.
9) Bellatrix (Harry Potter) - Like Snape, the character of Bellatrix has come alive for me so much more fully thanks to the brilliant casting in the films. She’s already interesting, her time in Azkaban, her unwavering devotion to Voldemort, but seeing her actually embodied by Helena Bonham Carter just tips her over the edge into complete badass.
10) Bella Swan (Twilight) - I almost didn’t add her. I still have the bitter taste of Breaking Dawn to swallow. But the thing is, as sickeningly Mary Sue as she was in that final installment, at least she was finally interesting! She finally did things and acted on her own and made decisions and took responsibility. So there’s that. Let’s see if the movie brings back some of that early magic or if the whole saga is just ruined for me now.
