Firefly 1.01

Jun 26, 2012 16:12

I’ve been wanting to do a complete rewatch of Firefly for a while now. Sure, I’ve watched random episodes here and there, but I’ve only watched it straight through twice: once when it aired and once when I bought the DVDs. I rewatched the first episode, “Serenity”, the other night and was both impressed and underwhelmed. ( You're gonna come with us. )

Shiny! I'm so excited to read your thoughts about Firefly. I loved it at first sight which was a commercial that featured "Anna Espinoza" from Alias and a shot of the ship buzzing over some stampeding horses, followed by the episodes Shindig and Safe (I wasn't home much on Fridays back then.)

Hi madge! Long time no see!

It was kind of neat to see Anna Espinoza, since I watched Alias long after Firefly was killed. I totally remember that promo with the ship over the horses. That's the one that grabbed me. This was back pre-kids where we were going to see friends' bands every night so I would have plenty of time to watch TV before leaving the house at 10 or 11pm to skip the opener and still make it to the gig for the headerliner. :)

Oh, man, but I love this episode. Not showing it first has to be one of the dumbest television network programming decisions ever made because everyone I've ever shown it to has immediately asked to see more. It just draws you into that world. I was hooked with "The Train Job," since I watched it as it aired, but I think I would have fallen passionately in love much earlier if they'd shown this as the actual pilot.

I haven't done a Firefly rewatch in ages. I'm almost afraid to watch it too often for fear of wearing it out.

Honestly, I don't understand the programming logic behind that decision. But clearly it didn't matter for me since, as I just replied above, I was hooked from the promo.

I do know what you mean about wearing a show out. I think that's why it's taken me so long to dive in this time, even though I've been thinking about it for a good year and a half now.

I was hooked from "The Train Job," (I hadn't seen any promos) but in a weird way, it was "Serenity" that made me fall desperately in love with the show. When "Out of Gas" aired, our local newspaper TV section said something about how it must have used footage from the unaired pilot to give the backstory of the crew, with some snark about being early in the show's run for a clip show. Then I saw the episode and got the feeling that wasn't true, so I got online and went in search of info, and ended up finding a script for "Serenity." Reading that script was what made me get insanely hooked on the series and an ardent fan, even before I saw the episode.

Ooh, I like that it was the script that hooked you. That seems perfect for a writer to fall in love with the written version.

I vastly preferred the novelization of Serenity (the movie) to the movie itself. It filled in gaps and provided details that I found wanting after leaving the theater.
