I did freelance translating for awhile. It's definitely nice in the fact that you can work from home, work (semi) at your own pace, and if you're not doubling as an editor, you can just whip out a literal translation, add a few footnotes and you're set.

Hm....I hadn't thought if I would be in an office or freelance or what, but it's good to know what's out there. This post was literally my first thoughts on it, so...thanks! I'll see what I can find out.

You might talk to double_dear; they're the translators for Saiyuki and Fruits Basket and a whole host of other stuff. I know from them that freelance translating is a very risky business, but I don't know that it'd be any riskier than freelance editing or writing or whatever you're doing.

So if you want it, go for it!

I have to admit I've never heard of double_dear, but I will look into it.

I'm honestly still trying to figure out my options and my pile of homework isn't helping...*sighs* But thanks for the advice!

We're being stupid and translating a lot of our stuff into Japanese for our Japanese accounting customers, despite the fact that no one in the company can actually speak Japanese. (Except for maybe Dapeng, but I'm putting down money that he's actually Vietnamese.) Anyway, I don't know how far along the project is, but I'll keep an ear out for you. A lot of us work from home, so I don't see any reason why you couldn't work from several states away!

Unless you DO want to move down to Florida. XD!

Well, I really am kinda rusty, but if it was freelance, that could be a really nice chance to get a start. Thanks for the extra set of ears! And yeah, the name Dapeng makes me think Vietnamese...

...Florida wouldn't be so bad.

You can write in English?! Holy cwow, you think you know a person... ^_~

If you're willing to put in the time and effort to strengthen your Japanese, I'd say translation is a good possibility. 'Course, I was always partial to the voice acting thing for you. Did you know that TCC offered a voice acting course last spring?

(Sorry I've been MIA lately. October has not been a good month. *sigh*)

Yeah, it was news to me, too! And all this time I thought my Swahili was just so good...

...dang it, Nini. I make a decision and then you throw an even more fun one at me! How hard would it be to take that course? Or...would it not be next spring? Because that could be amazingly fun...

(I hope October gets better for you! *glomps*)

Forgiveth me! I didn't mean to complicate your career decision process. ^_^

According to the TCC website (www.tacomacc.edu), the voice acting class is offered regularly. It looks pretty cool actually... The course description says it covers different types of voice-over work as well as tips for breaking into the business. If you're really interested, you should definitely check it out!
