Authors of the Moment

I want reviews on a few authors please. Sadly, I admit I have never read anything by these guys. Looking around online at their writing styles tells me nothing about them either. So...I turn to you, LiveJournal community, for guidance.

Faulkner

P.G. Wodehouse (this guy more than the others please)

Nick Hornby

I overrated Hornby, because I read About a Boy first. You should definitely read it, because it seems like Hornby tries to mix pop culture with morality and try to create a kind of modern day fairy tale. I think About a Boy is the only one that really pulled it off; the others felt a little strange and even contrived. How to be Good was okay, and A Long Way Down too, I suppose. They're good reads, but About a Boy is the only one I feel comfortable calling excellent. I disagree with minsies a little; I think he can do the grown-up book well, but only actually has on that occassion.

I second the Wodehouse; I got nothin.

Faulkner, I think Lauren mostly nailed it. You either love 'em or hate 'em. I read The Sound and the Fury, and I still have like NO idea what happened in that fucking book. There were some little tidbits that I remember liking in and of themselves, but as a whole book, it was very WTF.

Thank you both. I got A Long Way Down and a smallish collection of Faulkner novels. I'll dig in a bit this weekend and see how it goes. Just for grins and giggles, because I apparently like self torture, I also picked up Canterbury Tales.

Also, I want to find something to hold the attention of my 11 year old. He is reading those silly Goosebumps books like they're the hottest thing to ever be printed. I really don't have an issue with that. I just want to try to turn him on to other things. He really enjoyed A Wrinkle in Time and Eragon.

Wodehouse is one of my favorite authors favorite author. I get things like "comedic genius" from the reviews. Which, when you consider my favorite author, makes a lot of sense.

I finished She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb for the umpteenth time. I recommend it for those "I need to feel better about my life!" moments. I like him because he writes a troubled woman so well ( ... )

Thank you! I'll tell him about those authors. He absolutely LOVES to read.

Now I need to find something that strikes that passion in my daughter. She prefers writing to reading.
