Livin in a small town...

Well, I'm here and I almost hate to admit - I love it.

The air is clean - the crisp clean you can only get when you are so far away from any big cities you don't even get their radio stations well. Sure, I have Springfield and Worcester 30 miles away in different directions - but in the grand scheme of things, those aren't big cities.

It is so quiet at night I almost cannot sleep. No highway traffic, no air planes, no police helicopters or sirens (ok, there were sirens last Thursday but that was for me - more on that later). Occasionally you hear a dog barking, or a car drive by, but it's not constant by any means. I am on a side street off a side street off a side street; no one drives down here unless they live on the block. Most people's cars are in their driveways by 8pm - maybe 10 on the weekends.

I had a hell of a time driving home from a vet appointment the other day - there are no street lights on the main road I was on (the vet I go to is about 9 miles away), and it was a weird feeling being surrounded by that much darkness. I'll get use to it again - but I truly forgot how dark it gets out here. In Vegas, if you are within 60 miles of the city, you can see the glow; not so in Ware.

The house is coming along slowly but surely. There was a hiccup in the system last week when my body decided to betray me and I got violently sick, to a point of not being able to move - an ambulance was called, I was taken to the hospital and given fluids, pain killers and anti-nausea meds, and sent home... only to have the same thing happen 4 hours later - 2 ambulance trips in one day, followed by a night in ICU (only because there were no other rooms available) is going to suck when the bills come in. They never totally diagnosed why I was suddenly impersonating Mount Saint Helen and in some really nasty pain, but whatever it was seems to have left as quick as it came on.

My week so far has been filled with contractors, roofers, repairmen, etc. all fixing the little and not so little things going on in my grand old home. My brother is going to be bringing me a 99 Chevy Blazer he was given by his boss - a big difference from a 2008 Toyota Yaris, but hey, its got 4 wheels and is in good shape, and has the full power package - not to mention, its free.

The longer I am here, the more I love my house - it has its issues, but it also has charm, charisma and a reasonably low mortgage payment - for 158 years old, its in better shape than I am! I really thought I'd hate living back in the town I spent so many years trying to get out of - but I honestly don't. I like the fact that the convenience store where I get my cigarettes also has home-made polish bread fresh baked on Sunday mornings. I love the produce stands that dot along the 2 main routes in to town. I forgot how fun a good barn sale can be and what real fresh eggs taste like.

I am going to the WMPE munch tomorrow night, and am very much looking forward to it. I enjoy the message boards and can't wait to participate in the events.

All in all, life is good.
