This is probably my absolute favorite ACD story, in the end: it is imo THE perfect sfnal disaster story, the pattern by which such things should be judged by, and against which the products of Messrs. Crichton and Cussler ever fall short (not to mention the briefer works found in dedicated SF journals.)
