I've been under the weather this week with a cold that keep pushing me down. After lots of rest each day, I've been venturing out to do the things I need to do before burrowing back into my blanket cave.
Last night I played in The Big Bash at The Hideout to a full and crazy warm crowd. It was one of those epic energetic shows where it seemed like nothing could go wrong. We even did a romantic comedy set in the civil war and had an audience member civil war expert tell us when we were inaccurate. The audience loved it when we got facts wrong as much as they liked it when we got something right.
Then in the Parallelogramophonograph show we had an audience member give us the title for our improvised play out of our book of play titles. We chose, "What's Wrong With The Girls?" We ended up performing a play set in the 1950s about two high school girls discovering their burgeoning homosexuality together in a world filled with ideas of "going-steady" and getting an "MRS degree" in college. Our technical improvisers made some amazing lighting and sound choices that added perfectly to the piece, which was funny as well as sensual. As the audience happily made their way out of the theater at the end of the evening, I thought,
"How nice is it to be able to perform a piece like that and have everyone come away having thoroughly enjoyed it?"
Tonight I'm performing in the Love is a Funny Thing show at The Hideout, with essentially PGraph + Chuy (PGraph likes to joke and say that we're married to improv). It's our Big Bash format, with a focus on love and relationship themes. We also give the audience roses and fancy chocolates, and it's always a delightful show. I remember early Valentine's when Roy and I would go out on a fancy date, but this somehow seems more fitting to our life. Valentines spent entertaining a lot of people alongside some of our friends. We'll make a raincheck for some one-on-one time later.
I'm so grateful for all of this.
