Apparently humans use laughter as a way to communicate friendliness rather than appreciation of wit. According to an article in the New York Times, "it's not about getting the joke. I've been thinking about what I could possibly major in. I decided a good plan would be to just look at all the courses offered and make a list of the ones I was interested in.
