So, over the weekend the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame held its induction ceremonies. I heard "Guns-and" put on a good show.
If whoever decides such things needs help with the 2012-13 ballot, I can give them the results of the
polls I started last fall.
With a little help from my friends (y'all who voted), in addition to Heart, The Cure, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Donna Summer, War, and Rufus w/ Chaka Khan from the previous ballot, add:
B-52s
Dire Straits
Electric Light Orchestra
Eurythmics
Iggy Pop (solo)
Jethro Tull
KISS
Meatloaf
Moody Blues
Muppets / Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem
Peter Paul and Mary
Rush
"Weird Al" Yankovic (unanimous in my poll)
There was also strong sentiment for the owner of CBGBs (Hilly Kristal) and artists of iconic album covers.
But in the end -- and I'm not meaning to sound a music snob who questions the whole legitimacy of the Hall -- but for this whole exercise in a popular-music museum to be genuine, it should let *everyone* in. Every band, even the ones you think suck, is somebody's favorite. Every hit song, no matter how lame you think it is, has impacted someone's life in a personal way. Such is rock and roll.
So, yeah, hate on this whole process if you must, but at least we get one cool party a year out of it. And from time to time, they get it right.
