Right now, I'm getting more votes than any of 'em

I’ve been resisting the urge to comment on the presidential race, or to be more precise the ongoing race for the Republican nomination to run for U.S. President in 2012.

Of course, I’ve had my thoughts on the field, noticing that according to opinion polls, a minority of about a third to less than half of rank-and-file GOP members support Mitt Romney, but he apparently holds a clear lead as the remaining possible voters are split between the various other options. If there were a singular person Perrybachmanpaulcainhuntsmangingrichsantorum, s/he would clearly be the frontrunner with overwhelming support, but that’s not happening. I had thought that Perry would be the necessary person to rally all that not-Mitt support behind him, but I overestimated his charisma. It doesn’t help that these aspirants are having televised debates practically every other day. Overexposure like this is only gonna make most people tune them out, and as Perry once pointed out, they gain the public and the candidates little and mostly are just opportunities to catch candidates in verbal gaffes (especially, as it turned out, Perry himself) and make them look bad.

But all this matters little, especially declarations of who is “ahead” or “behind” or “winning” or “without hope of the nomination,” because not a single vote that matters has been cast, nor will they be for several weeks. As far as nominating delegates go, they are all in a 0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0 tie, and will be until the real voting in Iowa, New Hampshire, and so forth. One hundred years from now, all this B.S. that’s going on now will NOT be in the high school history books.

So, until the real voting starts, it’s all just puffing and posturing by strutting egos, which we all humor and gossip on as we do all our bread-and-circuses distractions. It’s minor news if a candidate consigns him/herself to obscurity by dropping out, but otherwise, it’s just a reeeally long pregame show.

Speaking of egos and “real voting,” the polls are open in LJ Idol ( open voting, for as many as you like, entries posted next to usernames - click here - I’m down in Tribe 9) through Thursday night.

The topic this time was “What does narcissism have to do with me?” which in reality not is not a whole lot. Or is it? Staying true to my mission to stick to fiction in the alt journal, I took some real-world inspirations and wrote this mildly otherwordly piece at beldarzfixon.
