So, I've only told this to one person in my RL (Thanks again for the support,
meggygurl!), but I've decided that I'm going to join roller derby. I've basically been in love with it from the second I saw my first bout. Everything about it just... calls to me. Plus, it seems like there'd be a lot of benefits: good exercise, new friends, stress relief, FUN. I've been missing playing sports for quite a while now. I'd thought about going back to rugby, but the fact is that I wouldn't be good enough to make it on to the local team and I'm not sure my body could hold up to the un-padded carnage anymore. So now I'm trading one sports obsession for another... :-D
Now that I'm all resolved and stuffs, I have to be a little patient. The league's next meet & greet is not for another 3 weeks or so. However, their next bout is between then and now, so at least I'll have some more fun spectator experience! As for what happens AFTER the meet & greet I have no idea. I know it involves WATCHING one of their practices, but that's all I know for sure. I have no idea if they take new people on year round and work on integrating them in, or if they do bootcamp/fresh meat sessions, or what... So we'll see.
At any rate, I think I might use this journal to document my derby experience. To start with, I should say that I spent my entire childhood on roller skates and was very good at it. Obviously thats been a while, but even just 3-4 years ago I was skating aggro inline. Not the same by any means, but at least I will not be starting from scratch skating skills-wise. As for fitness/endurance on the other hand... lets just say it's been a while since I felt remotely fit. BUT when I find a sport I care (obsessively) about, I find the motivation I need to whip my fat ass into shape. Anyways, wish me luck!
