So it's 1/30 and I do not have a draft of my grant proposal. Well... I dunno. I have a document that I wrote up for my advisor in which I outline the things that I know and the things that I do not know. I think for this to be a real grant proposal I'd need to

It's taken me a few years to figure out what the heck I'm doing, and even so at best it's a short-time venture. To keep myself from rambling too much at length about that, though - here's something you might want to try.
What you're looking into is a facet of science. What is it about science that's new and relevant that makes it something important and relevant to you? Go out and find all the latest science magazines. Take a look at the articles about the latest research, read a few. See what other people are doing. See if there's any part of it that makes you say, "Oh, now that's cool," or anything that perks up your interest. Take note of what fields they're in. Go out and wander around a science museum for a bit, looking at exhibits. (Especially childrens' museums!)
Sometimes the major thing to do is to separate yourself from your schoolwork and look at the basics of it. Is it a guaranteed fix? No - but it might give you some insight in what you're doing, and what you need to do. The important thing is to go out there with the pointed idea that you're not going to think extensively about your work - you're reading stuff and checking out the museums to find something fun and interesting. It's literally going out to hunt down inspiration, to find it, and to drag it back to your work with you, whether it comes demurely or kicking and screaming.
*HUG* And the other major important thing is? If you can't find it, if you realize that this isn't what you want - it's all right. Take leave from your academic studies and live life for a bit without the academia hanging all over you. It's amazing what a breather can do for you.
You never know. A year off from academic work might lead you to just the kind of inspiration you need to finish it... or start something new, if you discover that's what you want.
Miss you, hon. Take care.
