Character: Misono (as in, Koda Misono)
Journal: misono_soup
Band/Solo/Ethnicity: Solo artist/Japanese
Race: Zashiki-Warashi. (Also found here)
Occupation: Currently? Unemployed. (Unless you count living with somebody and bringing them good fortune-and she does-in which case it is 'zashiki-warashi') I imagine that she will be finding employment within the game. And trying to live with everybody else for free. She also occasionally sells blessings of good fortune. She's actually got a permit to do it-like busking on street corners.

Character History:

Physicality: Phsyically, Misono is indistinguishable from humans. (Mostly. And anybody able to sense magical beings will be able to tell that she's not human.) She's short, has dark hair that is currently long and highlighted blonde. She's not fat but…she's Japanese-industry-standard fat? She's comfortable to hug and cuddle. She's got a round face and chubby cheeks and a big smile. At home she's apt to wear traditional kimono and yukata. She's also just as likely to wander around in her pajamas or her underpants. When she's out she'll wear either kimono or 'normal' human attire-provided they are Cute.

Personality: Given that zashiki-warashi are usually children, she is somewhat childish. She can be demanding when she wants attention and a bit of a brat at times. She is bright and bubbly and brash and opinionated. She speaks her mind-and often without thinking about how to put things politely. She can have trouble seeing past her own view of things-for example, paying rent. She's there causing good things to happens so why should she have to pay rent? It's not malicious, just a child-like way of understanding some things.

She is also sweet and affectionate to those she likes. She can be a very good listener and companion, capable of being gentle and quiet and a good caretaker. She tends to like the homey, domestic chores…when they need to be done. She might not notice the floor getting sticky or the fact that laundry hasn't been done for a month but if it's commented upon, she'll take care of it happily. She enjoys playing small, harmless pranks, likes toys and cute things.

Powers: Misono's powers are largely innate, rather than active.

The first thing to know is that she is not always physically manifested. Being incorporeal she has no form and no mass but can still manipulate physical objects. For example: If her roommate wants her gone for the day she might just de-manifest and hang around anyhow, while playing small pranks such as moving her coffee cup around the apartment.

She attracts (minor to moderate) good luck and prosperity to the members of any household she is living in. Things have a way of 'working out' for them in a manner that seems almost coincidental. She also wards off trouble and danger in the same fashion. Leaving a home doesn't cause the household to fall into hard times-unless that's how it was when she moved in and providing that she is moving out of her own free will. If she's being kicked out or is leaving angry, bad things can happen. She cannot be forced into a household but she can be forced to leave.

Being a hearth-sprite, Misono does have some active powers but they mostly involve housework (as in, she can mop the floor while sitting on the couch watching soap operas) and keeping the soup from burning. Using them taxes her about as much as physically doing said chores. Saving food from disaster makes her hungry. She can also actively protect the people of her household from a distance…providing she knows that they're in trouble and need her help. This taxes her greatly and will cause her to be unable to manifest physically for some time.

History: Being zashiki-warashi, she has no family aside from any household she adopts into. Originally from Kyoto, Misono has lived all over Japan in different family homes. She's quite old though she's not really aware of just how old she is. This is because she never really paid attention to the passage of time, preferring to tell time by the rhythm of the household and by moving on from one household to another. As the world became more focused on time, she's become more aware of it. She is at least old enough to remember the destruction and 'mess' of the Onin War (1467-1477).

She came to the United States-and New York in particular-after the second world war. Because it sounded like fun. She tends to live with Japanese who are living in the city or with descendants of Japanese immigrants. For free.

It tends to go a little like this:
Grandmother: Ah, granddaughter! A zashiki-warashi has chosen your household! How lucky!
Granddaughter: But I don't WANT to live with her! She's a freeloader!
Grandmother: You will honor and care for the zashiki-warashi and she will bring you luck! Be good to her or you'll break grandmother's heart!
Granddaughter: Damn it, grandma.
Misono: SCORE!

She currently lives in a room in an apartment in East Village (N 14th St/Avenue C) with a woman named Mackenzie Okada.

For a little while, at least.

The apartment was filled with the homey scents of warm rice, soy sauce, fresh linen and beeswax. The floors and counters gleamed, the dishtowels hung crisply from the oven door, and late afternoon sunlight poured richly through the windows. Misono hummed to herself as she checked the shrimp potatoes. "So good," she sighed happily.

She heard the door open and cocked her head, waiting expectantly. "Welcome home," she called crossly when nobody announced themselves.

"Misono, what are you doing?" asked a voice.

Misono turned to see her roommate, Mackenzie, staring at her in disapproval. So Misono pointed to the table. "I made dinner!"

"Not that traditional crap," Mackenzie muttered. She brushed past Misono and took out a frying pan. "Victor is coming over and we're making hamburgers."

"Traditional crap?" Misono said flatly. "Hamburgers? It's like you're trying to drive me out, acting like this."

The frying pan banged against the burner, a sharp retort like gunfire. "I have been trying to drive you out since you moved in."

"Eh? Why would you do that?" Misono sat down at the table and began to serve herself dinner. "I'm the best thing that ever happened to you."

Mackenzie began to throw ingredients on the small counter next to the range top. "The best thing? The best thing? You don't pay rent, you never have a job so you never help pay the bills, you waste what money you do have on Lolita dresses and stuffed animals, and half the time you don't do any housework unless I tell you to! You don't do anything!"

Taking a bite of shitake-mixed okara, Misono frowned. "What about that promotion at work that I got for you?"

"You got for me? I worked my ass off for that!"

"And that big tax refund that you got because of me?"

"I had H&R Block prepare my taxes because of my pay raise! They found deductions. None of that was you!"

"And didn't I bring you Victor?"

"I met him at the police station when he arrested you for selling blessings with an expired permit!"

Misono nodded. "See? I brought you all sorts of luck." She held out a forkful of pickled radish leaves. "Want a bite?"

Mackenzie threw up her hands. "You're useless!"

Something in Misono crumbled a little bit. "Fine," she said stiffly, getting up. "I'm going to go make some money and get my own place and then you'll see how you like it without me!"

"Oh, thank god," Mackenzie muttered fervently, beginning to shape the hamburgers.

Misono went to her room and collected her permit and her purse. "I'll be back later," she said.

"What?" Mackenzie dropped a patty on the floor. "What do you mean you'll be back? You said you were leaving!"

Misono tucked her hands into the sleeves of her kimono. "Well I'm not going to move out until I have a new household. Besides, you'll change your mind. You're just emotional because you have your period."

"That's it. I'm calling in an exorcist," Mackenzie said.

Misono snapped. "Go right ahead," she said and stalked out the door, stomping to the elevators and fuming all the way down to the ground. When she got to the sidewalk she looked up and saw that there was thick, black smoke pouring from the open kitchen window of her apartment. Something was obviously on fire. "Oh, crap," she said. "I didn't mean to do that." She watched Mackenzie's head pop out the window and heard her coughing. "You deserved it," she shouted up at her, waving.

People on the street were staring at her. She beamed at them and pointed to the corner. "I'm going to be selling good fortune! You can get them in five dollar amounts, tens, twenties, or fifties. For a hundred I'll move in with you for the day!"
