I'm gonna do reaction posts for real this year.

Apr 23, 2011 23:44

Okay! Real, blow-by-blow reaction time. Don't mind the non-s5 icon; without it I will have used the Eleven thumbs-up icon thrice in a row and it's all about eljay aesthetics.

oh hey, I forgot this opening part happened. In fact, what is actually happening here. Is this going to be important later or is this basically just the Moff being like "look how there's totally sex in Doctor Who!" ? I feel like this opening sequence has to have been included for a reason. I mean Amy and Rory live in their house or whatever for two months and are apparently totally content to just wait for him, while he's "being deliberately ridiculous" to get their attention? "He's up to something, I know he is." So why did all of this happen? There has got to be more going on here than the Doctor dies and Amy's preggo and River's about to head to the Library. There's got to be. Not even I will believe that the Moff is this aimless for kicks and giggles.

And like, he's invited them to his death and the first thing he does is hop off the hood of a car and hug everyone? Isn't the Doctor too...angsty for that?

ahahahahahaha I LOVE the Easter Island joke. <3 Also, the Doctor has never had a diary before, has he?

Yeeeeah, this whole "it's time for me to stop and I need you all..." Something's going on.

Okay, notice: he says "and you've put on a couple of pounds" and she doesn't make her "ah yeah I have to tell you this thing" face, she kind of makes a "nyeh" face, like she's just put on post-wedding pounds and he can leave her alone thank you very much, which he totally can, seriously, what a douche.

I want to say it's possible that he really dies here, but like I said already, if the Doctor dies here there can never be another Doctor. No Twelve, etc. so when Matt Smith gets tired of the show - or when any of them get tired of the show, because he doesn't invite anyone else to hsi death, no future companion - then it's over. For good. Yikes, though, the first gunshot is so jarring. Oooow and their faaaaces. It's a beautifully acted scene, whatever it is. Also, I really don't want the whole season to be about this one scene.

Oh hey, Alex is wearing jeans with a jean jacket. Is that okay, then, fashion-wise? I've always wondered that. Isn't that too much denim? Isn't it a bit home school? Whatever.

Most certainly dead?...I just...I just don't think so. But oh God, Karen, your rocking and whimpering, I cannot.

ANYONE ELSE SUPER MAD THAT HE GOT A FLAMING BOAT INSTEAD OF A PYRE LIKE THE MASTER GOT FROM TEN? DON'T THESE PEOPLE KNOW HOW TO BURN A TIME LORD?

"What do we do, Rory?" bless you sweetheart.

Here's another confusing thing: they all got identical invitation and he invited himself first, so where is he right now? Are we supposed to assume that his invitation told him to meet them at the diner, later, or did he not come for some other reason...? IT'S SO HARD TO KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE.

Karen here "will you two shut up it doesn't matter you're still talking but it doesn't matter he's deeead" oh my God you shining star you precious pearl guys she is AMAZING.

I do have to say, this is possibly one of the only episodes where I really care about River. I mean, whoever she is and whatever's going on, I really do feel bad that a few minutes ago she was over the moon because they were on the same page (ha get it diary joke) and now he doesn't really know her again and that was probably one of the only time she'll get to be so in sync with him. And that is a paragraph I never thought I'd write! So well done, Moff. /grudging

Ooookay, but here we go. She's not afraid of anyone dying because she's worried about a worse day for her. But then later she talks about how she thinks she's about to get to a time when he doesn't know her at all and it might kill her. I mean is that all she's worried about? And then it does literally kill her, so she is afraid of her own death in a timey wimey way...I dunno.

Yeah okay he says "go make babies" and I was like ELEVEN WHY SUCH A DOUCHE but also, the looks they give each other; they haven't been doing that. Those are not "oh whoa what a lucky guess should we tell him" looks, they are "man, that was kind of douchey" looks. Rory looks at Amy like "that was rude, don't you think that was rude?" not like "YOU'RE HAVIN' MY BABAY." Apparently this is the post where I make a case against Amy being pregnant. Is this partly because I have issues with people getting married and immediately having children probably not whatever who knows!...and I typed all through the River showdown but it's meh.

I laughed at River correcting him, I'm not gonna lie. It's funnier when it's Eleven than when it's Ten?

See, at this point in the office, I'm like, the episode is halfway over now and the episode has just started. Not counting the stuff about Eleven dying, which I just assume is going to be way more than this two-parter. So I just kind of feel like...nothing has really happened yet. Even though a lot has happened, really. Kind of. I don't know, the bit in the office is not my favorite bit of the episode. "You think you can just shoot me?"  "They're Americans!!" ha, ha, we're such ruffians and thugs.

Yeah okay here's my big theory. Ready go. The aliens have something to do with the unresolved bits of last season (because surely, surely the Moff wouldn't start some new big thing at the beginning of a new series without coming back to his super exciting silence will fall plot). And they show up and make you feel sick to your stomach when you forget them, and that combined with memories or whatever of Amy's Choice is what makes Amy's big confession "I'm pregnant." Because I'm preeeetty sure she's not, really. I think what she wants to tell him so badly is that she saw him die and that's why they're here, but she can't quite remember it, so she tells him that instead because it makes sense in her head (put on a few pounds, go make babies, stomachaches). And later when River and Rory are in the storage unit or whatever, the thing they see is almost definitely the thing that was upstairs in The Lodger. I think we're just not quite done with the events of last season. And all of this centers around Amy still, right? We're meant to be finding out this season "who she really is to the Doctor" and what her "big dark secret" is, and I don't think it's pregnancy. And also, she keeps talking about how she's keeping a secret from the Doctor, in a way that seems like she's keeping it for a pretty long time - longer than half an hour of the first episode of the season. So there. She's not pregnant. 'cos I said so.

Back to your regularly scheduled useless comments: OH MY GOD THE BATHROOM SCENE IS SO FRIGHTENING. I seriously don't even like looking at this thing, it's that scary. I was afraid she wasn't going to be able to see it and it would be another Just Amy thing, so I guess I'm glad that didn't happen. She's kind of sweet, though, I like her. I'm sad she dies. OF COURSE THE LIGHTS FLICKER. okay, also, the fact that it does have a mouth is so, so scary. Clever girl, Amy. Yeah, he wants her to tell the Doctor "what he must know and what he must never know," and surely neither of those things are pregnancy. Also she doesn't know why she said she has to tell him something, and she doesn't remember what she needed to tell him. She didn't forget that she was pregnant.

There's a piece of an Arthur interview floating around on tumblr where he talks about how he thinks people like Rory because he's "the normal bloke," and I love that about him in this episode. He helps Dude feel okay, he doesn't want to go explore the unknown with River and he doesn't want her to open the door; how often do people have these normal human reactions? Yay for you and your character, Rory.

My God, River and Eleven are so much flirtier in this episode than usual, what is going on here.

Aw man, I really hope Eleven didn't steal the cool space stuff and show up to kill himself in 2011. I can't handle anymore Eleven-directing-his-own-life-as-two-different-people stuff.

see, I was liking River so much, and then she made a sex joke and called it a spoiler. And I'm like, see River, this is why no one likes you.

Good grief they're so scary for real.

Another thing is, Rory doesn't want to go down there but it's not really because he doesn't want to leave Amy, he just doesn't want to do something "dangerously stupid." And like, if she was pregnant, he would do anything ever to stay with her. I don't think that's asking for too much character consistency; it's the Moff but it's not Glee. He's not acting like he's going to be a dad with Amy. And sometimes Amy is kind of a jerk to Rory but if she was pregnant Rory would know and she certainly wouldn't want to tell the Doctor before him. I'm working really hard to disprove the Amy's pregnant idea and maybe no one even believes it anyway hahaha whatever.

This is kind of a nice speech from River, kind of sad, but possibly kind of creepy. By "impressionable young girl" are we talking about like Rose young or this little girl in this episode young? Because it's looking like Eleven and River really are romantically inclined and like that's...it's...I can probably deal with it, but not if he picked her up as a little kid. And then he didn't even let her be a real companion? That's...wrong. Also it's pretty Time Traveler's Wife-y, which, um, I guess she maybe is the time traveler's wife, but...same plot, really? Bad book, by the way, in my always humble opinion. See the movie if you're a Rachel McAdams fan.

fs.hdfshulalharlar guys they're so scary, guys, they're so scary, and he thinks there's nothing there. Oh also, it's possible isn't it that Something Bad happens to Rory here in a second, isn't it? Yep, there we go.

Maaaybe the Moff worked in some gay agenda and a few "Doctor who?" jokes to try to butter RTD up so RTD would finally say yes to writing a few more episodes PLEASE LET THAT BE WHAT'S GOING ON HERE.

See, it's really really important, it's crucial. The terrifying aliens want her to believe that she needs to tell him this Thing. It just can't be something as relatively trivial is that she's pregnant. Also, look how he doesn't really care. It's not really really important to him. I don't know, she sells it well, but like, Karen would if the Moff said to. I don't know. I'm just not buying.

Sorry but could the face in the spacesuit thing be any more like the Silence in the Library? I mean maybe they're supposed to.

Next time preview looks pretty freaking good. This episode was pretty freaking good! I really liked it, more than I maybe expected to. The only things I'm not necessarily a fan of I'm pretty sure aren't really happening anyway, except for Eleven being a tool but that will probably get toned down soon, so. Hurray! I'm excited! Bring on series six!

reaction post, amy pond is crazy, eleven is such a cutie, rory williams is precious, doctor who owns my soul, s6, river song gets a tag i guess
