I've assigned myself the mission of listening to as many musicals this summer as I possibly can. Musicals that I've always wanted to immerse myself in but haven't had the time. I will faithfully report on this as it continues.
Sweeney Todd (revival recording):
Pros - Good old-fashioned Sondheim goodness. Michael Cerveris. Patti LuPone. Incredible harmonies. A Little Priest.
Cons - The subject matter didn't really appeal to me, the way something like Into the Woods or Company does.
Overall impression - Not my favorite Sondheim piece, but definitely brilliant, as is everything he touches.
The Light in the Piazza:
Pros - Some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. The actors are wonderful, both vocally and dramatically. I like the usage of Italian.
Cons - I've heard that the story of the show is weak in comparison to the music, but I can't judge because I haven't seen the actual show, only listened to the CR.
Overall impression - I am not an opera person, but this music is truly enchanting.
