Discussion Post #44

Dec 17, 2011 10:33

Since I'm not sure if torigates is around to do another poem discussion today, I'm going to go ahead and put up another general discussion post. You all know what to do with these by now, right?

In case you missed it, our rec post for December, went up last night, so make sure to check that out.

Have fun!

Ahahaha, I kept thinking of this video while I shopped this year! (Although the main person I was thinking of buying books for is 14 and I decided she'd probably prefer an Amazon gift card.)

I don't remember how I felt about it at that age, but, once I could read for myself, I ALWAYS wanted books.

I did! Although I remember the year I got my first Barnes and Noble giftcard that I didn't get to renew until we went to Chicago most clearly because I'm pretty sure my jaw dropped at the sight of a two story bookstore.

I am the biggest nerd ever, but you already knew that.

My Borders had two stories. It was AWESOME. *goes into mourning*

I mentioned Ready Player One by Ernest Cline in the rec post, but yeah! That was awesome! So was The Spymaster's Lady by Joanna Bourne. Definite rec if you like historical romances and there are spies, so if you've been missing Lauren Willig, check it out!

I didn't like The Alloy of Law by Brandon Sanderson as much as I've liked his previous books, but it set up some interesting things for the world. Juliet Immortal by Stacey Jay itself wasn't that great, but OH. The things it set up for the sequel! WANT IT NOW. I struggled some with the writing in Cold Magic by Kate Elliot (too much description and backstory), but it was an interesting story with good characters. Enthusiasm by Polly Shulman was annoying. And I ended up not even finishing Love Unscripted by Tina Reber, after liking the beginning a LOT. It's self-published (I THINK?) and I would've loved to see what a good editor could do with it. And then I read Betsy and Tacy Go Downtown by Maud Hart Lovelace for belovedbooks.

And now I'm reading The Gray Wolf Throne by Cinda Williams Chima, ( ... )

Haha, look at you making progress on your in progress reading! That's awesome.

And I am still so pumped you liked The Spymaster's Lady. THANK GOODNESS.

Haha, that's kind of my goal for the end of the year, though I'll probably let myself slide on The Writer's Tale, since that's a different kind of book.

YES. Now I just need to resist acquiring too many library books so that I can actually read the rest of them, haha.

That reminds me, I don't think I ever finished A Writer's Tale. I should do that at some point.

Haha, I am suddenly binging on books, both library and otherwise. Oops?

Saving Francesca! ♥ I used to go back and forth over what my favourite Melina Marchetta book was, but I think I've finally settled on Francesca. I love her so much.

...yeah, you have awesome taste.

Saving Francesca was fantastic, but The Piper's Son was a whole different level. I loved it, but it's a hard book to reread.

I'm in the middle of Blood Red Road now, actually (also only because of good reviews) and it's got dialect, which isn't really my thing. I'll give it a shot anyway, though. (If I made it through Huck Finn I can make it through anything.)

Yeeeeeah, the good reviews of Blood Red Road mentioned the dialect, so they didn't entirely convince me! (But I have it, so will likely read it eventually.)

Ok, so I spent the day finishing my Christmas knitting (YES!) and reading and commenting on the rest of my older sister's novel she wrote and wanted an opinion on. So now I am finally free to read whatever I want!! Although I am pretty sure when my sister reads all my comments she is going to keep calling and texting me about them. *FACEPALM*

Anyway... I am too excited to get to read all the books I have been wanting to over my Christmas break. Going to delve back into the Hunger Games trilogy since I have to return those books to my sister when I see her next week. Then my goal is to finish up the 4 books I have started throughout the year but have yet to finish. Then I'm going to play it by ear (and by Christmas presents lol).
