Hello, I’m Waruji (Serpentine Wisdom on ffnet) I’m a university student currently writing a 25-40 page essay about fandom on the web for my sociology class and I would be really grateful if you would answer a few questions for me. I'm not sure if this post is allowed, if it isn't I apologise. Just tell me and I’ll remove it.

1) A 'hobby' that quickly became a part of my every day life, just like eating and sleeping.

2) Because it's more fun to have others feeling the same way you do, rather than sitting in your room alone and keeping your thoughts for yourself.
For the 'How' -> Discussions on websites like LJ, Aarinfantasy and Animexx. Reading and writing fanfics, drawing fanart, making graphics, etc.

3) Currently there's about 5-7 fandoms I'm active in. But overall it's around 30 fandoms, I have.

4) Positive: Fanfics. Definitely! Fandom would be NOTHING for me without fics. * Negative: The wank and drama among some people. So annoying.

5) Yes, the whole anon-thing encourages ppl to harrass others just for the heck of it. Not cool.

6) My family is okay with my fandom activities. And most ppl I know in real life are in fandoms/internet as well. I dunno anyone, who has a problem with me writing fics, drawing fanart, etc. Some ppl don't fancy yaoi/slash, but that's the same as hating on gays in real life. Stupid.

7) When I stop participating in one fandom, then it can only have 2 reasons: Either the fandom is dead and there's hardly activity anymore - or the ppl behave so shitty (drama/wank, etc) that I'm disappointed and then I back off and become more active in my other fandoms. (Since I have more time for those then)

8) In bigger fandoms, there's usually more wank and ppl, who think they're the fandom-elite. Also in bigger fandoms there's often one big main pairing and 90% of fics and art is about this pair. In smaller fandoms it's more intimate. ppl know each other better (my experience) and there's often a wider variety of pairings and more tolerance.

9) Of course. When I was new, the fandom and web seemed endless. It was kinda shocking that I won't live long enough to read all the fics I wanted to read, lol. But with the years, you know your way around, you know what to avoid, where to go, everything's more organized, since you know the websites and all.
Of course my writing was atrocious in the beginning. Also when I started 9 years ago, I only wrote/read German fics. Meanwhile I also write in english, something I'd have never dreamed of.
I often approach new fandoms by starting to read fic on ff.net and joining communities in LJ. Since I comment every fic I read, I easily make contact with ppl through comments. Also I start taking part in discussions then.

10) Mostly yes. Of course there's also newbies, who're just born to write stuff. They have a terrific style etc.
But in most cases the first fics you read by someone are... well, not that good. Often OOC, overly mushy, not realistic, full of typos, since they never heard of betas, etc.

11) Dunno. I only know the 'Rules of the Internet' - but that's only for the lulz.

12) Well, there's fandoms which are very old and still active. Ppl from those fandoms often think that such fandoms are 'better' than others. Also there's always fandoms getting looked down on due to the topic of the show itself. (I experienced this often with 'Gantz'. Ppl tend to hate on it, without watching/reading the whole thing. They just know it contains x, y and z, and then they sniff at it.)

13) I don't think so. On every big fanfiction/fanart site, there's a lot of crap. And also a lot of good stuff. It's mixed - you just have to filter.
I seldom read fic on sites specifically for one fandom, where 1 or 2 ppl decide what is 'good' and can be posted, and what not.
Everyone has another taste and everyone should be free to decide what to read and write.

14) I ship in every fandom I'm in. Main reason for this is to bring together the characters, who aren't together in the show, but should be. Or if it's a canon pairing, then you wanna see them doing this and that, which they never did on the show.

15) There's thousands of fics out there, which are better than many of the books in the stores. And fics are for free, that's awesome.
Also: There's kinks you'd never be able to buy a book about. But with fanfics you can induldge in that stuff.
