SO, YOU'RE WRITING ABOUT NEW JERSEY...

Mar 25, 2007 13:31

So, after reading some fics with inaccuracies about New Jersey, I decided to take the liberty of doing a "How to write New Jersey" page. It'll be public, so if you want to show it to people and such, you can. Also, Would anyone like to do similar for Chicago, LA, New York City, and other major sites for bandslash? It would be awesome to have a bunch of information right there for fellow slashers.

So... you're writing about New Jersey!

Well, little slasher, you've come to the right place! Welcome! I'm Donna. I've been a native Jersey girl for all sixteen years of my life and I can honestly say I know my way around this lovely little state. So, before you decide to read this, I can honestly tell you that it's best you throw away most references to this state prior to this post. Forget about your syndicated Sopranos episodes, puns, and jokes like, "I just flew in from New Jersey, and booooy are my arms tired!" Because this state is quite fabulous, and shouldn't be degraded.

Now, I understand why Jersey's getting its own pseudo-celebrity status. We just legalized civil unions, and we have bands like My Chemical Romance and Bon Jovi. We are sandwiched between two major cities, Philly and NYC, and we love it. We got a little of everything, the shore, which is the beach for you kids not from here, our own music scene, and our own mentality that can only be attained from being here.

Now then, most of you kiddies are probably thinking about writing New Jersey because of this band:

In all honesty, I can't blame you. They are quite good looking and pretty much slashable. So writing about them will be a breeze.

But, anyone can write about two guys having sex. Anyone can write your basic love story. There are many other elements to slash than what meets the eye. Scenery is a big deal.

It's very easy to throw band boys into tour buses or hotel rooms. But, sometimes, you need to put them into their natural enviorment.

WELCOME TO BELLEVILLE!
Belleville, as most fans know, is the area that 4/5s of MCR came from. It is a rather quirky area. It is the self-proclaimed “Cherry Blossom Capital of America”, having a whole entire park dedicated to them. While DC proclaims they are, Belleville technically has more, hence beats DC’s ass. There is many Italian immigrants that decided to live here, which is why it is brought up as a stereotypical Italian/Jersey town.

But, stereotypes aside, Jerseyans, Italian or otherwise, are quite friendly. They don’t want to pop a cap in your ass. They don’t want to make you an offer you can’t refuse. Not every Italian is in the mafia. Sure, some of us known some people that know some people that are in the mafia, but we’re good people, we swear it. We also have impeccable taste in food, and it’s not just pizza and lasagna.

BUT, HEY! WHY DOES BELLEVILLE JUST GET ALL THE FUN?
New Jersey also has its own playground, our shore points, which are against the Atlantic Ocean. They’re quite beautiful. Point Pleasant is mainly for the kiddies. There’s an aquarium that has the cutest blind seal named Lucille and a colony of penguins. Seaside Heights is more for the college/high school/“emo”/”scene” contingent. There’s a tattoo parlor on the boardwalk that you can watch people cover up those embarrassing proclamations of love on their right arm. There’s also Wildwood, which is a place that is stuck in the fifties, filled with Art Deco style and plenty of Doo Wop to go around. If you’re old enough, we also have Atlantic City, or the good ole AC- which we proudly (I think) boast that Pete Wentz and his girlfriend for the night Ryan Ross paid a visit to for a DJ stint.

We do have our bad areas. Camden is known to be a crapshoot of sorts. Newark can be scary. Jersey City isn’t quite rosy everywhere. But we’re a state and every state has its bad parts. We’re also split into three different areas. North, South, and Central Jersey. Everyone is quite proud of their region, and we do, in fact, act differently. We’re a huge population for a little state (more than eight million. EIGHT-FREAKIN’-MILLION), but we all have a bond that is formed with being from Jersey. And sure, a lot of the girls here wear tights thinking that they constitute as pants, but you know what? They really don’t care.

Our means of transportation is through buses, trains, cars, and other normal things. We have metros that are connected to Philly and New York, depending on our region (Belleville is connected to New York). We also have warm summers, cold winters, and really sweet autumns leaf-color wise.

Our high school lives are average and we are, in general, a pretty average state. But we love it and we know that we can suffer through snow and taxes to live here.

So, next time you decide to write about us, get us right <3
