I'm trying out the new "ShareThis" feature on
Itog.com -- I can crosspost my reviews on ITOG and LJ at the same time! Look at what I wrote in ITOG last week:
Is there a proverb to describe that awful sinking feeling you get when you get to know someone better and discover that you don't like the new things you've learned about them?
I feel that way about
Daphne du Maurier. I absolutely love her novel
Rebecca. It stands as more than a "romance", it's well-written, believable literature that perfectly captures the personalities involved. I am also a fan of her horror short stories (Hitchcock's
The Birds is based on one of them).
So in June I was thrilled to discover a du Maurier omnibus at the library, four novels in one binding. I checked it out and took it with me on a trip as my main reading material.
Sadly,
Frenchman's Creek,
My Cousin Rachel, and Jamaica Inn are just not up to par. I could see Jamaica Inn being made into a good movie, even if I'm not a fan of the writing, but the others are silly, unbelievable, stock romances.
I wish I could still think of Daphne du Maurier simply as an outstanding horror writer and novelist!
