6. born another gender
Mao frowned.
Zura scowled back at him, daring him to say a word. A- a gown of rust-brown edged with floral designs wrapped around her body. Silk flowers decorated her hair, looking haphazard and oddly touchable.
"It's very Earth Kingdom," he hazarded.
Zura began to tear the flowers out of her hair, and Mao felt a pang of regret. All he did, though, was reach out to take them from her hands before they could fall to the floor.
7. schoolfic
"You cheerlead?" the new boy asks.
Mai raises her eyebrows, then looks down at the cheerleading uniform she is clearly wearing. "Yes."
"You don't seem the type," he says, squinting at her with his good eye. The other eye is still swathed in bandages.
Mai is almost curious about what happened to him. Or she would be, if his sister weren't trying to take Ty Lee's squad away from her and if Ty Lee weren't letting Azula.
"Ty Lee cheerleads," she says, and he nods like that's all the explanation he needs.
Good. Because that's all he's going to get.
8. police/firefighters
Zuko scowled. "There's still people inside."
Mai nodded. The building wasn't structurally sound, smoke filled most of it, and the blaze was still growing.
Zuko would go in there, anyway. So would she.
9. urban fantasy
"Get the sword, Zuko," Mai hissed, not taking her eyes off the nuckalavee. It leered or grimaced at her; expressions did not work well on a thing with no skin. She could see its muscles moving.
The sword, the black-iron thing the selkie prince had hired her to retrieve, lay on the ground at Zuko's feet.
"It's iron," he said, fear tinging his voice.
"You're a changeling, all it will do is sting," she snapped. "Get the sword!"
Damn it, did another bit of ignorance in the human-raised changeling have to crop up right now? They really didn't have time for this- Neither of them had the magic to take on a full nuckalavee, much less whatever had compelled it to come this far out of the water.
The nuckalavee stepped forward, hoofs clopping on the asphalt of the street.
"Zuko!"
Zuko's hands shook as he grabbed the sword, and his face twisted with pain as his hands began to smoke.
Mai blinked.
That was- that was not how a changeling reacted to iron.
His scar, he'd said it was a burn scar. Fire, she'd assumed, because only fire made sense for a changeling. And only being a human-raised changeling made sense for someone so ignorant of the Seelie courts of New Orleans.
But his magic was powerful for a changeling's, wasn't it? And iron could burn just as badly as fire.
Weren't his unglamoured eyes Unseelie gold?
"Mai!" He yelled, lunging forward with the sword even as the nucklavee lunged forward.
10. harem
"No," Mai says frostily.
"I wasn't even thinking about it!" Zuko waves the parchment around frantically. "I was just mentioning it existed! Father never had one, I don't want one! There hasn't been a royal harem in the Fire Nation since before Grandfather Azulon married Lady Ilah!"

Happy happy joy joy! :D
I like the quickly-sketched world building in 1, 2, 6, 7, and 9 - stuff is mentioned that happened earlier, there's a sense that there's a proper world hiding here. 1, 2 and 9 even get cliffhangers out of this (what happens next in 9?!).

Oh gosh, I really like this pair up. And I've always been in love with AUs... argh now you set me on a craving... and LOOKING for good AUs might be a challenge.
