Zutara: What I Want To Read
I don't really like Zutara. The series made it somewhat interesting, and I will always adore the scene in "Waterbending Scroll" with "I'll save you from the pirates". But the fans mostly make it really annoying, especially with how they treat Mai.
It also makes me sad the way no one ever seems to tackle politics with Zuko/Katara. The man is the Firelord. He doesn't get to marry willy-nilly. I know, certain kings of England and other places would disagree with this assessment. However, Zuko is going to be an unpopular Firelord initially what with ending the war when the Fire Nation had the entire world in the palm of their hands.
Marrying a Water Tribe woman on top of that? It is to laugh.
You know what I want to see in the way of a Zutara story? I want to see a story where Zuko and Mai are married but have romantically parted on mutually pleasant terms. I want to see Katara as Zuko's mistress.
I want to see her wrestle with whether she wants to remain Zuko's mistress for the rest of the life. I want her to accept that she will never marry him, that this is the most she can have with him. He can love her and adore her and shag her passionately, but he can never officially acknowledge her or any children he gets on her.
Does Katara want that? Or does she want a husband? It's not like she's starved for choice here - even if Aang has moved on, there is Haru, there is Jet (who may be dead), there is Hahn if you're crazy like me and admire their potential for gorgeous children.
