Warners to 'reboot' Superman

Because it worked so damn well with The Incredible Hulk (not!)

Needless to say, I am not best pleased by this. I *adored* Superman Returns and I stand by my love of that film. No word as to whether Bryan Singer will be back in the Director's chair (or whether Brandon Routh will return as the Man of Steel) but... ( Read more... )

At first I was going to say that DC Comics doesn't seem to be happy with any of their film adaptations, considering the constant "rebooting" between Superman and Batman. But then I though about that and realized they just aren't making as many movies as Marvel. The Nolan Batman seems to be doing very well for them. I was under the impression that Singer's Superman was an excellent modernization that could have easily been continued. I must not be thinking like a Suit.

Marvel looked like they were pretty stable with a pretty solid run of X-Men, including its Wolverine and Magneto spin-offs (regardless of how well the latest movie was taken by fans, at least they didn't re-invent the team mid-series), as well as the Spider-Man run. While they have a good start on other heroes like Iron Man and Ghost Rider, they were pretty quick to want to reboot Hulk. Also, there is a new Punisher coming out. Trailer looks phenomenally sweet, but this does make a 3rd try for that one.

Back to the original issue, I think Superman is a real tough one to translate to film. In the comics he was re-invented several times, partly to keep up with the changes in culture. One of those re-inventions was because they realized he was too powerful. That was why they had Doomsday kill him and then he came back, a changed man (supposedly). Maybe the movies have a hard time putting limits on him as well.
