"The Chernobyl disaster arose from an accident that occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Pripyat, Ukraine. It is regarded as the worst accident in the history of nuclear power. Because there was no containment building, a plume of radioactive fallout drifted over parts of the western Soviet Union, Eastern and Western Europe, Scandinavia, the British Isles, and eastern North America. Large areas of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia were badly contaminated, resulting in the evacuation and resettlement of over 336,000 people. About 60% of the radioactive fallout landed in Belarus according to official post-Sovietic data [1]. According to the 2006 TORCH report, half of the radioactive fallout landed outside those three Soviet countries [2] [3]. The disaster released over four hundred times more radiation than the atomic bomb of Hiroshima."
twenty years ago today, my father was watching news footage of the chernobyl disaster on the television in the waiting room at virginia mason hospital in seattle. he couldn't believe that he and my mother had to bring a brand new baby into the world with this tragic event occurring in the world.
however, even with this horrible disaster sharing the one day that's supposed to be mine, i can't help but feel privileged that i actually have something this phenomenal to share it with. and i am still surprised at how many people still don't know about the chernobyl disaster. because of what happened, this day will go down in history, and i'm glad to call it mine.
happy birthday to me, and all those who share this day.
