Avengers Marathon

Apr 29, 2012 21:09

I have reached the point where I am bookmarking people's Avengers posts and saving them for later. I am already pretty spoiled, but at this point, I want to SEE it, in the theater, and I can't until 12:01 AM May 4th. So what I did to help tide me over was have myself an Avengers movie marathon, including the two Hulk movies, which are the only ones I don't own. The 1st one, with Eric Bana, that will continue to be the state of affairs. There were a few things I liked about it, most particularly the scene where Hulk is very, very gentle with Betty, but mostly it's confusing and surreal and I have no idea what was going on during at least the last third. The Edward Norton version is much better, though, and it actually has humor, which the 1st movie lacked. I find tossing some humor in there helps quite a bit. I may end up buying that one. I even ended up liking Liv Tyler.

The thing I'm finding frustrating with most of the movies is that most of them have decent to great characterization and plot until about 3/4ths in and then it's like the director goes, "OH! It's an action movie!" and drops all plot and characterization in favor of people banging on each other for 15 minutes. I know, I know, they're action movies, what can I expect, right? But it's the reason that I tend to fast-forward through much of the last part of Captain America, because it's just all so boring. I just really want to get to Steve sacrificing himself and Peggy saying goodbye, and then poor Steve waking up in the future. All so much more interesting than Steve and Hugo Weaving battling it out in a melodramatic fashion. (I love Hugo, and I know his character is supposed to be a little over the top, but he felt too over the top, somehow.)

I mean, I like a good action sequence, don't get me wrong, but I like it balanced. Which is why I'm quite fond of Thor for that. Yes, there's a lot of banging about, but it's got two things mixed in that make it better than the others. First, Thor sacrifices himself for his friends and the town and thus earns Mjolnir back. Then, the movie's "final battle" takes place between two brothers, and their father. So the whole thing has so much more meaning and is thus more interesting. Well, at least somewhat. I admit I still fast-forwarded a little. :-)

Is it Thursday yet? How about now? Now?
