Richard had lied to Anita. He'd told her that he'd been afraid he couldn't have tortured Deputy Thompson the way she had. He'd figured it would be easier for her to believe than the truth. Richard knew it had almost been too much for her to do. She would never have believed his fear had been that he'd have taken too long, enjoying it far too much. But he didn't lie to Jean-Claude about it. He didn't have to. The vampire understood very well the fear of being consumed in the joy of breaking skin. Richard tore into the deer with tooth and claw, knowing that somewhere someone understood him.
