First, I have been tempted for years to write about a heterosexual female brown dragonrider in Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern universe. If you haven't heard that before
azarsuerte can confirm it for you. It is against Anne McCaffrey's rules for what gender-orientation of human can Impress what kind of dragon. That's not what I blame Jack for. It pre-dates his existence. I blame Captain Jack Harkness for the fact that during the latest rounds of people on my
flist talking about Pern I developed the idea of a homosexual male gold dragonrider. It went so far as my wondering if Ianto Jones would rather ride a bronze or a gold. I know my Jack muse would cheerfully ride either. He has no problem being a mum. A homosexual male riding a gold is of course just as much against "The Rules" as a heterosexual woman on a brown. The urge to write another character that's a definite violation of Anne McCaffrey's rules I blame on Captain Jack Harkness.
Second, I like Romana's canon regeneration just the way it was shot. Again, this isn't Captain Jack Harkness's fault. It looong predates Jack. I have encouraged people to write girl!Doctor pointing out that that regeneration makes it clear that Time Lords can change gender, among other things, when they regenerate. What I blame Captain Jack Harkness for is the proliferation of genderbent Time Lords in my head. I allowed my Doctor muse to become a girl for his 11th incarnation, before the canon Eleventh Doctor was cast, so Jack would have the Doctor's company in an RPG we were in. I didn't want to play Ten and they were willing to let me make my girl!Eleven. That's just were it all started though. Girl!Doctor was followed by girl!Drax, and in case that wasn't enough both my Romana muse and my Master muse are now considering genderswapping. I blame Captain Jack Harkness for genderbending among the Time Lords in my head proliferating.
Third, I am afraid of flying. Not in the, "We're all going to die in a flaming ball of death!" sense. I appreciate that, airbuses disappearing in the south Atlantic not withstanding, air travel is a very safe form of travel. No. I'm scared of getting stranded at LaGuardia instead of getting to Chicago for cocktails, or getting to Chicago but having my luggage go to Cleveland. I don't blame that fear on Captain Jack Harkness. I might blame it on Peter Wingfield, but that's a story for another time. No, I blame Captain Jack Harkness for getting me to a) buy a plane ticket to Chicago for the Torchsong convention, and b) making me face my fear of flying all alone. Yup, I definitely blame Jack for that. John Barrowman and Gareth David-Lloyd, among others, will be at the con.
