Yesterday evening, I got to the Capitol South subway entrance to find yellow metal gates up, and three to four cops hanging around. The entire station was closed, and the coppage directed us a block south, where they said a shuttle would come by and take us to the next open station. Then, after a wait, they came down and said, no, we needed to go a block (now 2 blocks) north and over to 3rd street for the shuttle.
We all streamed in that direction, and there was, of course, no shuttle, just a big mass of befuddled commuters. I tried to get on the next Metro bus, which closed the door in my face, and finally ran further east and got on a bus marked Union Station. This bus, after a little detour, took me to Union Station, where I could get a cab. Naturally, the line for the cabs were horrendous, so I thought I'd try the Metro from inside or maybe a train to King Street in Alexandria.
Hey, Union Station Metro was open, and, like magic, when I got to Gallery Place, the very next train was a rush plus yellow to Franconia Springfield, and I GOT A SEAT. I get excited by little things. So I sat and read on "Horns," a horror book by Joe Hill. I felt pretty lucky at that point, although it did end up being a 2 hour commute. Thank goodness my legs are now working properly, and I was wearing sneakers.
This morning, Metro is supposed to announce a whole new set of closings and delays while they do repairs, because the Federal Center to L'Enfant station closings yesterday were due to a third rail insulator which began smoking. Note that the last emergency repair involved the entire system for
29 hours on a Tuesday of a workweek. So I'll be interested to hear what thrilling news is coming out today.
