Day 20 - The "can't stand the sexual tension anymore" pairing?
Himoto Sora/Date Reiko (Shitsurakuen)
Of all the ladies in Sora's 'harem' who nurse some form of attraction to their dumb-but-earnest white knight, Reiko's mix of admiration, annoyance and stubborness make her easily the most interesting potential love-interest (though let's be honest, Koharu's recurring fantasies of getting power-dommed by the easygoing, oblivious Sora make her pretty damn amusing too XD).
Like Sora, Reiko also wants to rescue the girls of Shitsurakuen from their misogynistic environment, but whereas Sora takes action in the open, Reiko prefers subversion and guile, which inevitably sets them at odds at first but they soon come to a sort of understanding. The dynamics of their relationship are just more interesting, frankly, and it makes shipping them all the more appealing.
Day 21 - A pairing you like and no one else understands why?
Maka Albarn/Medusa Gorgon (Soul Eater)
Aaaand there goes half my F-list :)
Honestly, I'm kinda not sure why even I like this one to the extent that I do. Mainly, I think the idea of it is interesting because it sets up a sort of twisted dynamic between the characters.
I kind of had the idea that, since Maka lives in an environment mostly surrounded by men, that she'd be drawn to one of the only adult women in Shibusen as a role model of sorts, and some of their interactions prior to Medusa's reveal seemed to suggest a measure of admiration and trust in this regard. This lead to the natural conclusion that Medusa would be exactly the sort of person to twist and manipulate these sort of innocent, platonic feelings to her advantage and..... yyyeah once I got to that point it was hard to unsee it.
Basically, I can see it being pretty much how
girlinstilettos characterized the idea of the Jihl/Vanille pairing, to be honest X)
It's a little fixation on the sexiness of irredeemably evil women, the older/younger woman teacher/student appeal... ah fuck it, I have no regrets.
Day 22 - A pairing you hate and no one else understands why?
Souji/Anybody (Persona 4, though this extends to basically MC + Anyone in the SMT games)
In like 99% of cases, I'm really not too concerned with what other people ship, which seems reasonable considering most of the time I'll be firmly in the minority anyway.
If there is ONE thing I cannot get however, it's the insistence on SMT fans-- and really, the Persona fandom in particular-- to pair up perfectly good actual characters with the MCs of the respective games.
The reason for this is really pretty simple: because these MCs aren't characters at all. Yes, they have specific designs, and yes you can select 'their' responses, but there's nothing like an actual personality to any of them. They are literally blank slates that exist solely as the bridge between player and character interaction, and nothing else; a tool that looks nice but reacts to nothing in a way that would betray anything more than that.
It's not like something in "Mass Effect" or "Dragon Age," where you craft the character but the way they embellish simple dialogue options gives the impression of a personality; it's not even like Link, who's never said a goddamn word but whose reactions/body language from as far back as "Ocarina of Time" have successfully conveyed character-driven/emotional responses. Admittedly, Persona 3's MC MIGHT be the exception to this rule based on his behavior in cutscenes, but Souji is significantly worse off in this regard.
When their are plenty of strong characters with actual depth and specific personalities to ship, I can't understand why you'd basically go through the trouble of attributing emotions onto a robot instead of just going ahead and making an OC anyway.
