Chapter 10 “Hey, give it back,” Nino ordered.
“What? Your virginity? Ah wait, but I didn't take it yet..” Ohno pouted. Nino's hands curled into a fist, but he was proud for being able to keep them away from making contact with any body part of Ohno's.
“You know what- my ID!” Nino scowled. “You wanted me to see you, didn't you? Here I am.”
“I'm glad you did come.” Ohno smiled.
“Seriously, Ohno. I'll stay the whole lunch period, but can you just please give it back?” Nino really didn't feel like playing games anymore.
“I am hoping you'll be willing to stay even though I actually don't have it...”
“You-!” Nino cut himself off and took a deep breath. “You're saying you don't have it. It went missing after I last met with you, and I don't see who else would take it, nor would I carelessly lose it.”
“That's very unfortunate,” Ohno commented.
“You suck,” Nino replied flatly. He turned away in frustration, knowing that he shouldn't be making a big deal for an ID. But still.
Nino jumped slightly at his bottom being squeezed, and whipped back around to face Ohno. “Don't grope me!”
Ohno frowned. “I figured we should try to increase our sexual activity. That way, once we start dating we can dive right into se-”
“Shut up!!” Nino aimed a kick, but Ohno dodged it with ease. “If you don't have the ID, I'm leaving.” And Nino did leave, almost disappointed (not because Ohno not having the ID meant he couldn't stay, of course not).
He found Aiba, Jun, and Sho in the cafeteria. They seemed to look surprised when noticing him- an act that made him suspicious. Too tired and still annoyed to really do anything about it though, Nino sat down wearily. “Stop looking at me like that,” Nino snapped at Aiba.
“No- well, um, did you find your ID?” Aiba asked hurriedly. Nino shook his head and sighed heavily, resting his head on Aiba's shoulder. Sho gave him a sympathetic look.
“How goes your practice for the concert?” Sho asked.
“What, the music concert?” Nino frowned slightly. “It's kind of annoying when the other students aren't really serious. Not even the teacher!”
“Nino-chan wanted to go to a music school,” Aiba said quietly.
“Yeah, but these two idiots insisted I go to the same school as them,” Nino muttered, pointing at Aiba and Jun.
“You definitely held yourself back,” Jun replied, his voice sounding a little strained. “We didn't even know you wanted to go to a music school until after we got into here...”
“Whatever...It's not too bad here,” Nino said softly. He didn't like the way Ohno's face flashed quickly through his mind, so he chose to ignore it.
“And it is a good thing you're here,” Sho said. “I mean, our school's band would be at a loss.”
“I'm flattered,” Nino said, with not much feeling. “I don't get it though, all I play is the piano anyway. That's not even really part of the band except in some songs.”
Aiba giggled. “You'd be even more popular if you played guitar though.” Nino elbowed Aiba painfully and took his head off his shoulder.
Sho smiled at the horrified look Nino shot him. “It's okay. I mean, I knew already- Satoshi told me.”
“That idiot!” Nino frowned deeply. He actually trusted Ohno with that secret, but if the older student would be telling others-
“Sho-chan's our friend too. He deserves to know,” Aiba's kind voice cut through Nino's thoughts. Nino glanced back at Sho feeling slightly guilty, because now that he thought about it, Sho seemed the most trustworthy out of them all. Sho shrugged and smiled again.
“Anyway, no talk about it here,” Nino murmured sheepishly, still aware of the multiple students around. Aiba nodded quickly, imitating zipping his lips.
A passing student accidentally knocked over Aiba's bag. Nino bent down to pick it up, but he stopped midway when an ID card peeking out of a pocket caught his eye. The face and name on it wasn't Aiba's, but his own.
“Oops!” Aiba squeaked softly and quickly picked up the bag. Nino rolled his eyes when Aiba was staring intently at Jun's ring.
“I saw that,” Nino said. Aiba flinched at the obvious anger. “What the hell are you guys up to?”
“What? Nothing.” Aiba raised his eyebrows in faked surprise, but still wasn't facing Nino. “Hey, Nino! I found your ID card!!” Aiba grinned and handed it over to Nino.
“Look, I'm not stupid.” Nino sighed and put it safely into his pocket.
“You're quick when it comes to things like this, but slow about love,” Jun muttered.
“What was that?” Nino frowned accusingly.
“Look, we were just trying to get you and Ohno to not be so...distant,” Sho said innocently. Nino eyed him warily; he could believe it, but he also had a suspicion that it was more than just that.
“Don't butt in. I can deal with it myself.” Nino didn't want any help, because if this really was 'love', then Nino would have to tell Ohno himself.
“Nino?” Aiba asked softly. Nino could tell he was worried.
“Thanks for your concern,” he said slightly bitterly, “but I'm fine. I really am.” The others didn't look too satisfied, and Nino couldn't blame them. He wasn't sure if he could believe his own words, either.
--
The music room was empty. Nino sighed softly, wondering if he was the only one who practiced outside of class. He walked over to the piano and sat in front of it. While he played, he thought about Ohno. It was time to stop ignoring his feelings, Nino thought.
Anyway, Ohno was the one who improved his music, he had to admit. Though the older student wasn't musically intelligent, sometimes a 'normal' audience's opinion was even more helpful.
Nino heard the door open, and soft footsteps approach. He kept his eyes closed though, his fingers still dancing across the keys.
Once finished, Nino opened his eyes and glanced at the familiar hand on his shoulder.
“Good,” Ohno said. Nino smiled.
“I would say 'thank you,' but-”
“Someone like me wouldn't deserve it, I know.”
There was something in Ohno's voice Nino couldn't quite detect, but it was enough to make him feel uncomfortable.
“Will you come? To my performance?”
“Yeah,” Ohno said softly. “I'll come.”
Nino turned around to face Ohno. The lighting made most of his face shadowed, making Nino feel even more wary.
“Promise.”
Ohno smiled and stuck out his pinky. Nino stared at it, then smiled thinly back and twisted his own against Ohno's. Ohno then sat down some chairs away from Nino, making him wonder why. It wasn't like Ohno to choose to be further away.
Not that Nino really cared.
“Sorry,” Nino muttered, but loud enough.
“Hm?”
“Um, the ID. Turns out Aiba had it..”
Ohno chuckled, amused. “Nino, I'm glad I met you.”
“Eh?” Nino blinked.
“I really liked your guitar playing. Your personality is even more interesting.” Ohno wasn't looking at Nino, but it still made him feel nervous. “You're extremely stubborn and rash. You lie plenty to cover up for your feelings. Even though you're like this, I like you the way you are.” Ohno's eyes then met Nino's, and though unreadable, enough to make Nino blush.
“What are you...” Nino swallowed, his heart thumping loudly against his chest. No one told him that before, that they would still like him even after knowing what he was truly like.
“So it's okay,” Ohno said softly, “if you don't want to love me.”
“What-”
“Answer me, Nino. It's a yes or no.”
Nino didn't like the dead serious tone. Not at all.
“I don't...” Nino started uncertainly.
Ohno smiled, but it seemed empty. “Okay. Bye bye.”
When he stood up, it seemed like everything was in slow-motion. But much too soon, Ohno was out of the room. Nino stared at the empty seat for a long time.
“Why..?” Nino clutched at the shirt material on his chest. There was an unfamiliar aching beneath. “I don't get it,” Nino whispered almost accusingly.
--
Nino pushed his way past the crowd swarming around him, wishing he had a pair of headphones to block out the yells of his name and praises.
“Ninomiya!” An adult Nino recognized vaguely as a teacher in the school stepped in front of Nino. “Your performance was excellent this time, much better than the pasts ones, I believe. What made you improve so much?”
Nino smiled bitterly. “Someone helped me,” he answered shortly.
“A friend? Or a girlfriend?” The teacher joked. Nino looked away and continued to try to move away from the crowd, only to find himself freshly surrounded by a bunch of girls.
Nino looked around almost desperately for Ohno. He hadn't been able to find him amongst the audience in the auditorium, but it was hard to when most of them were hidden in the shadows.
“Excuse me, I have to get to the music room,” Nino said and was greatly relieved when he was finally able to get free. Nino almost ran to the music room, and his eyes quickly scanned it.
Ohno wasn't there, and he didn't come.
