Sugar-Coated Lie
Joe monitored Miley as she continued to stride forth with his younger brother at her side. He could feel Kevin looking at him and he had the urge to tell him childishly ‘I told you so!’ But what good would that bring? Absolutely nothing. Just more grief to the already distorted situation.
“We have to talk to her,” he told Kevin lowly, aware of how close Miley, Nick, and Billy Ray were.
Kevin raised a challenging eyebrow at his brother’s suggestion. “And what the hell is that going to do?”
“I don’t know,” Joe snapped in return. “Maybe if we can talk to her we can convince her not to tell anyone. I mean, if she just understood -”
“No one is going to understand.” Kevin abruptly finished, his tone sharply slicing into Joe’s. “You already know that.”
“But -”
“Drop it, Joe. We’ll talk later.”
“Kev -”
“I said drop it.”
Joe glared at his brother, feeling, for the first time in months, upset with Kevin. It wasn’t like they didn’t tease or frustrate one another occasionally, but it was usually over silly, worthless things. This, however, was important. And he absolutely loathed how Kevin’s tone matched a mother’s whenever she scolded or chastised her children. Joe was far from being a child and he certainly did not wanted to be treated like one.
“No.” He spat, which may have crossed the line. Kevin already looked pissed to begin with, but Joe’s childish response to his demand may have strung a cord.
“Will you shut up?!” Kevin’s voice raised a few notches, gripping everyone’s attention. He forced a crooked smile to his lips, waving his hand in a dismissing manner to encourage them to return to their business and the hell out of theirs. Eventually Miley turned away while Nick sent the two a glare before continuing to escort the pop singer into the studio. Billy Ray remained indifferent, assuming it was some sibling quarrel he had gotten accustomed to over the several years of being a father to his semi-spoiled children.
“Kevin, I’m being serious, we -”
The elder of the two narrowed his eyes at his younger brother before walking ahead; leaving the other behind. In return Joe shoved his hands in his jeans’ pockets, blowing a long frustrated breath out. He honestly could never comprehend how unstable Kevin’s temper deemed itself to be. Sometimes he felt as if Kevin was a complete enigma he just didn’t have the ability wrap his mind around. Which was terrible, he thought, considering Kevin was, after all, his brother. But he supposed they were always an exception to the sibling rule.
Joe walked into the studio alone, Billy Ray not too far behind, and entered the studio to find Miley already setting up her sound check session. Nick and Kevin were seated on the couch, preparing themselves for the grueling day to ensue. Frowning, Joe plopped himself on the lone chair beside the already occupied couch.
While Miley began her session the three brothers remained silent. Nick was flipping through a magazine while Kevin began texting on his phone, leaving Joe to think quietly to himself. He was still pissed at Kevin and frustrated to no ends about how they had gotten themselves into this bottomless, consuming pit of deceit and lies. It was fun for a while, for the beginning when nights of experimenting blossomed into something more. But he was tired of thinking he was wrong. He wasn’t too bothered with the concept of going to hell despite his upbringing; he just simply assumed everyone would go to hell with him. Everyone has sinned at least once in their lives and everyone was doomed to hell’s welcoming flames.
Damn, he thought as he blinked blankly, he was turning into such a pessimist.
His eyes darted from the room’s carpet to his older brother, watching bitterly as some stupid and pointless text had brought a sarcastic smile to Kevin’s face. He felt as if he needed to crack some terrible joke to loosen the building tension between himself and his brothers though all jokes had eluded his grasp. There wasn’t really anything to jeer about, well, actually there was. Nick. But that meant Kevin would have to help Joe, which as of now, just wasn’t an option.
Gradually time had passed and Miley’s recording eventually ended. Joe was called in next and he slowly rose to his feet, dragging himself into the booth that earlier held Miley. He grabbed the heavy headphones from the podium and slid them over his ears, groaning when his hair had gotten in the way. He attempted to fix his bangs, force-sweeping them to the side with his hand. However, they managed to escape from his grip and fell conveniently over his eyes.
“Everything okay in there Joe?”
Joe sighed before shaking his head. “Just give me a minute, okay? Nick, you can take my turn.” Nick looked at Billy Ray who shrugged in response and he jumped to his feet, taking Joe’s place in the soundproof room. The said brother glanced at Billy Ray and then to Miley, muttering a quiet “sorry” before exiting the room.
Miley frowned, turning expectedly to Kevin. Kevin then pushed himself onto his feet, pivoting and made a quick beeline to the door Joe had just exited. He followed his younger brother down the halls and out of the studio all together, raising an eyebrow when Joe decided to sit on its dirty pavement. His brother was a quirky character all right.
“Joe?”
Joe rolled his eyes to himself before tucking the tips of his knees under his chin. His eyes were fixated on one of the pavement’s small cracks, failing to falter when he felt his brother stand aside of him. In return, Kevin remained by Joe as they waited in silence for something, anything, to happen.
“I made an ass out of myself,” he said eventually, his eyes traveling to the silhouette Kevin had cast.
Kevin sighed, shaking his head. “Nah, not really. I was being a bitch anyways. You have a reason to.”
“I’m just sick of it,” murmured Joe with an exasperated and exhausted edge to his generally light-hearted voice.
“Sick of what?”
The younger brother paused for a minute, biting his bottom lip before answering with the utmost truth. “Sick of this. Us.” Kevin flinched before he ran a nervous hand through his hair. He didn’t respond, he didn’t feel like he had the position to. “I mean, I like us. But. . . I’m sick of trying to hide everything, you know? It was fun at first but now, I’m not sure. Is it really worth it?”
“If your heart is in it, then of course,” Kevin answered. He dug the heel of his shoe into the gravel, feeling himself fidgeting under pressure. “Mine is, to be honest. Is yours?”
Joe sighed, his shoulders slumping as he exhaled the troubled breath. He thought his heart was into it. But the stakes were high and the consequences could be devastating. And he wasn’t ready to fall from the heaven Hollywood had perched him upon. Not yet.
“I don’t know. I want it to be,” he answered veraciously. “I really do.” And he really did. He really did.
“Yeah, me too,” Kevin muttered before lifting his gaze from Joe and towards the heavens. Like Joe, he didn’t expect himself to rise to heaven when his life eventually slipped from him. He might be living a dream but he wasn’t too far from reality. The Hollywood lights were heavy and consuming, but he wasn’t blind.
“Kev, what are we going to do?” Joe questioned next, his voice desperate.
“To be honest, I always prepared for something like this,” answered Kevin with little comfort. “I always expected Nick or Frankie to find out first, though.”
Joe turned to his side, titling his head upward to look at his standing brother. “Well, then? What are we going to do?”
“I’m not sure,” he frowned. “I’ll think of something. Everything’s gonna be alright though, okay? I promise.” He then extended his hand out and Joe quickly grabbed onto it, allowing Kevin to lift him to his feet.
Joe squeezed tightly onto Kevin’s hand before releasing it, noting they were still in a very public area. He wanted to believe every word his brother assured but it was difficult. They had been lying to everyone else for such a long time it was even hard to trust each other’s word now. He was going to try his damn best to believe Kevin though. His damn best. It was all he had after all.
Author’s Notes: Yeah, this chapter was pretty pointless I guess - it was still fun to write though :D. But I really just wanted the story to follow Joe for awhile. Anyways, yeahhh, review?
P.S. I <3 the playlist on my myspaceee
P.S.S. Oh god, my eyes are burning. I just saw a picture of Miley with Jeffrey Star and Alex from The Cab in the background. WTH is Alex doing? His days in my friend’s highschool seems so far away. At least he washes his hair now. Unlike his morning announcement routines. Guhhh.
