I Have Been Dining With The Enemy

Four hours. Four hours of sleep Miley had managed to take in the night before. Her stomach remained in knots, still digesting what she had seen. What she shouldn’t have. She didn’t necessarily accept it nor did she reject it either, she just. . . she didn’t understand it.

Billy Ray peeked his head into his daughter’s room, finding her seated at her burrow staring at her paled expression in its attached mirror. He frowned before clearing his throat, watching as she jerked frantically at the sound of his voice. “Miles, you ready?”

“Ready?” she repeated blankly. “I thought we were recording in another hour.”

“We are,” answered her father. “We’re having lunch with the Jonas brothers first.”

Realization quickly dawned upon the young teen and she resisted the urge to slam her forehead onto her burrow’s wooden surface. She forgot the five of them had arranged to have lunch prior to the recording time. “Oh, yeah. Just give me a minute, dad.”

Billy Ray’s frown deepened in return. “Alright,” he reluctantly agreed, however, paused before he drew himself completely out of his daughter’s room to ask, “Miley, is something bothering you?”

“No,” she lied conspicuously before twisting her head away from her father and began to browse through her drawers and pick out decent clothes. He sighed silently to himself but shut the door quietly behind him.

Once she heard her door’s lock click Miley returned her earlier gaze upon the mirror before her. She stared long and hard at her eyes, wondering if they had somehow played a trick on her but she very well knew nothing - not a trickery of light, not a misperception - nothing could have distorted her vision to that extreme. She saw what she saw. Even if it was by chance and by mistake.

Oh god was it by mistake.

Miley forced a bright and beaming smile to her face once her eyes had fallen upon three familiar figures heading toward her and her father. Her stomach twisted slightly when Kevin and Joe had mumbled something to each other, perking Nick’s interest simultaneously. It must’ve been about Nick and Miley. She was relieved, although definitely not surprised. She knew they wouldn’t say anything in public with prying ears and eyes surrounding them.

She glanced at her father, whom was waving at them in return. He turned to her, happy to see she appeared to be fine - far better than this morning and offered, “you go meet up with them. I’ll get us a table.”

After swallowing down a painful gulp of hard; collected air, she nodded and he quickly set off into the restaurant. She then pivoted toward the boys in response to hearing her name. “Hey Miles,” Joe smiled charmingly, jerking his head slightly to move the hair that had fallen over his eyes away. She couldn’t help but roll her eyes, assuming he was attempting to display his desirable hair. In fact, by the way he carried himself toward her it had appeared as if he was reeling himself out for a catch. Even if Kevin was standing right beside him, monitoring his every move.

She, however, did not take the bait.

“Nice to see you,” she smiled pleasantly although she could feel her eyes narrowing as they darted back and forth from Joe to Kevin. “Had a safe ride home I presume?”

“You could say that,” Kevin answered earnestly. “Nick was a complete brat on the way home.”

“Oh yeah,” Joe agreed with a mocking smile. “He had a hissy fit, yelling and threatening us. It was terrible.”

“We whacked him a couple of times, though,” Kevin continued casually. “For a good reason, of course. You wouldn’t want your guy crying on your shoulder, now would you, Miley? You’re obviously not going to wear the pants in the relationship. We’re just trying to man him up, that’s all.”

“Hilarious, really,” commented Nick with a dry and sarcastic edge to his bitter tone. He glanced at Miley whom was too consumed with his two brothers and suggested sharply, “maybe we should see if Billy Ray has a table?”

“Oh yes, let’s,” Joe sneered before ruffling his younger brother’s hair affectionately. “Seriously bro, loosen up a bit. We’re just having some fun with you. We’re not trying to piss you off, right Kevin?”

Kevin nodded in agreement before he motioned for the three of them to follow him into the restaurant. Billy Ray was already seated at the north side of the eating area and they quickly maneuvered themselves toward him. After situating their seats, they ordered their drinks and settled down. A conversation or two were exchanged between the five, though they died down eventually. Instead an awkward feeling manifested itself between them, the four adolescents lacking the ability to talk about teen stuff. Things Billy Ray wouldn’t either comprehend or wished he never had.

“’scuse me,” Billy Ray eventually said, rising to his feet after their waiter hurried off with their orders in hand. “I’ve got to take care of some business.”

“This is weird,” Nick muttered to Miley once her father was out of earshot.

“Yeah,” she agreed quietly, stealing a glance at Kevin and Joe. Her stomach twisted even more when she managed to catch their own private glances exchanged between the two. She then looked at Nick whom was smiling weakly at her in return with flushed cheeks and nervous eyes. She wondered if Nick had known anything about his two brothers, though, she was pretty certain he didn’t. Those types of matters weren’t meant to be intricately discussed amongst others.

Billy Ray eventually returned to the table, satisfied and hungry. Their ordered meals were soon placed for them and they all began to eat. Halfway through their meal, however, Miley noticed Kevin’s left hand had conveniently disappeared under the table while he began speaking with Billy Ray. Joe’s face faltered slightly but he quickly and effortlessly regained his composure, continuing to pick at his salad. Meanwhile Kevin maintained a straight face with his hand gripping tightly onto Joe’s thigh, even managing to spit out a few jokes and chuckle charmingly at Billy Ray’s ones.

Nick blushed when his hand grazed over Miley’s as he tried to grab the salt, fumbling slightly when he retracted his arm. In return Miley sneaked him a small smile and he appeared relieved. Honestly the boy was too damn adorable sometimes.

“I’m surprised,” she commented quietly, “your brothers are behaving nicely.”

That brought crooked grin to his face. “Yeah, I’m just as surprised. Kev’s a real good actor, you know. Joe too.”

“Oh, I know.” she assured. “So, when’s your movie come out? Sooner than the day when Joe cuts his hair?”

“Most likely,” Nick laughed. “He loves his hair. It’s kinda unhealthy. And he doesn’t even do his hair. Kevin does. Stupid, right?”

“Yeah,” she agreed before turning away to take a bit out of her sandwich. She glanced at Kevin, noticing his hand was still absent, and began to chew on her food as she wondered how long Kevin and Joe managed to maintain their relationship. How long had she been completely oblivious to them? How many times had they snuck secret affections to each other right in front of her? Nick? Their family? Their fans? Nick was right. They were excellent actors.

Joe peered up from his salad, his eyes locking with Miley’s. They both have appeared to have frozen, both pairs of eyes going blank as fear and assumptions crystallized within them. It was Miley who broke the stare, blinking quickly before she directed her gaze elsewhere.

Thankfully lunch had come to an end, both parties departing at the restaurant only to meet up again at the studio, now busy with other recording artists and employees. Billy Ray advised her daughter to go ahead of him and hurry into the studio to warm up her voice and she suddenly found herself walking alongside of Nick toward its doors. He was silent in concentration, squinting as the sun’s rays blinded his peripheral vision. Joe and Kevin weren’t far behind.

Miley felt herself being watched, concentrating hard on the pavement below her feet as she continued to stiffly walk beside Nick toward the studio. Her ears perked as Joe and Kevin exchanged soft whispers between them, catching a small proportion of their conversation.

“Kev, at the restaurant - I saw the way she looked at us. Miley knows.”

There was a pause and a faint, “I know.”
Author’s Notes: Well, this is probably the last time the story is going to follow Miley. -hears cheers in response- Okay, okay, settle down now. I just wanted to experiment with another character’s perception on their relationship. So yes, no more Miley POVs after this chapter. Woot, woot? Feedback, feedback? XD
