Spring Break, day 4

(March 13, 2012)

Splendid in our raiment, we walked to UN Plaza for an elegant lunch at Megu Japanese Restaurant, Midtown. J had seen it advertised on the web. We decided to try Kobe beef as one of the 100 foods--the VGT Omnivore's 100: http://beatrixal.livejournal.com/19539.html

Kobe beef cooked on a hot rock, ishiyaki (signature dish)

The atmosphere was calm and quiet. J and I had the Kobe beef ishiyaki, while E and C had the Bento Platter. We shared it around, so everyone had a taste. The food was superb and perfectly proportioned. Yes, it was very expensive, but this was a one-time visit. And, it's wonderful to have delicious meal, so lovingly prepared and served.

Walked back via MoMA, but it was closed. We would visit the Diego Rivera exhibit tomorrow.

We changed into normal clothes and re-entered tourist mode. E took us to Minamoto Kitchoan. Everything was Spring-themed, so we selected a variety of seasonal and traditional wagashi (a small snack of one or two bites). In light of our noon banquet, one of each per person seemed reasonable. For some odd reason, wagashi reminds me of tapas.

Syocoranmochi, a tiny rice ball dusted with cocoa powder

Tokoyo, candied yuzu citrus peel, lighter-flavored then candied lemon peel

Later that night, we chatted over tea and wagashi, decompressing from our busy day and long walks. These were my first very long walks after surgery on both feet. I survived with only minimal swelling. Yay feet!
