Sumptuary Laws?

- It's either that, or mandatory breeding laws. I'm comfortable with each.

I just wanted to share this passage from last night's "Little Steven" episode about rock and roll and fashion:

"I have just discovered the origin of the regular guy look. For those of you who have recently joined us, I have decided that there are only two things holding back the Rock and Roll Revolution, and it's inevitable rebirth; it's second-coming if you will, hopefully arriving in time to save humanity. And those two things are three-piece bands, and the regular guy look. Three-piece bands are simply not musical enough, or their all about being musical virtuosos, which is equally irrelevant. And as far as the regular guy look: bands should not look like their audience. That's not their job. It's okay once the audience starts showing up looking like the band. That makes some sense, because that means the band has a look to look like. Anyway, I'm no longer blaming grunge as the downfall of rock fashion. . ."

And from there goes on an explanation of Sumptuary laws; laws that restricted luxurious expenditures (mainly in terms of dress) for social and religious reasons -- though this was claimed in order to separate the nobles from the poor. These laws affected peasants mostly through time by prohibiting them from wearing shoes.

- I'm not saying fashion is vital to rock. It's not. But fuck, it would be nice to own some nice stuff to wear on stage every once in a while.

- By the way, my advertisement (ad-vert-tiss-ment) still stands: If you hate my guts, be in my band.

- All my love to you and yours.
