David J. C. MacKay, a physics professor at the
University of Cambridge and author of the new book, “Sustainable Energy - Without the Hot Air” (UIT Cambridge, 2009), said gestures like unplugging the cellphone charger when not in use should be seen for what they are - tiny.
“It’s like bailing the Titanic with a teaspoon,” Professor MacKay said. “The energy saved by unplugging the cellphone charger for one day is the same energy used when you drive your car for one second.”
Hear hear. Read the whole article, from The New York Times,
here. It makes me want to be an eco-consultant, what a bomb-ass job!! Although I feel a little guilty--the next line mentions how people should buy less "stuff" and I am certainly NOT eco-friendly when it comes to that. ):!!
Anyway, I don't think I posted a birthday post. Pity, that. Regardless, my birthday was awesome. Close friends, booze, laughter, crazy antics...who could ask for more? Plus a super cute boyfriend...pretty much a good birthday. Although, when are birthdays ever anything but good experiences? (:
Still waiting to hear back from Italy, although the hooplah about Amanda Knox has got me wondering if it'll still be a big deal come this January (that is, will the environment in cities like Perugia be altered due to "la studentessa di Seattle"?) I don't think so, or if it is, not enough to significantly affect me beyond the occassional comment or two. What I thought was interesting, though, was Sophie Egan's comment in her article in the Times about the North Faces in stark contrast to the Dolce and Gabbanas. Makes me want to do some major retail therapy before I head over to Rome. I certainly would rather not have foreigners judge me negatively based on the way I dress.
Speaking of which, I bought a gorgeous dress from J Crew the other day...took me a week's worth of agonizing to finally decide to splurge on it. It's so cute, and I can't wait to wear it out over the summer. Also bought a super cute headband. I think I'm going to start investing more in those--not too much--but I think I was inspired by, of all things, Gossip Girls. Blair just always looks so damn cute in them! I want to look that cute! (Although I know it's more to do with Leighton Meester and less to do with the headband/clothes but STILL. Even without the big eyes and pouty lips, her outfits are adorable. And I want all of them, even her nightgowns...tank tops and pajama shorts are nothing compared to something like
this! /retailjealousy)
Anyway, here I go with the not-buying-less-stuff bit again..does it make it any better that I don't drive at all? No? Damn. Back to finals studying, then...in 10 hours, I'll be done!
