Todd and I are on altar guild1, and round about four months ago, when I didn't know that I was moving to West Seattle nor switching jobs, I volunteered to set up for the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary service on May 31. Coming up to the evening, I have to admit I was not looking forward to it, being that now getting to the U District by 7:30 means driving to work and then driving to the U District and driving home...
Well, last night finally came along, and Todd and I rushed to church to set up the chapel, inhaled a quick gyro dinner, and then came back to church to find that we and Jan were the only people attending the service. I felt a little uncomfortable--it's hard to flub up reciting words when there's only four of you--but then reminded myself that there are times priests perform services with only one person in attendance, and we were three times that multitude. Anyway, Fr Steve had a little homily regarding the importance of Mary visiting with Elizabeth which was mainly reading two descriptions of the encounter from other priests and scholars. Then he shared a few closing remarks of his own, and, I have to tell you, it was like he was speaking directly to my heart. I wanted to cry out, or just cry, with how much hearing those words meant to me.
I know, we've all probably heard this message before, and I can't recall his exact words now, but they were something to the effect of how, even in our frailty and brokenness, caught up in unexpected and unwanted events, God uses us. Yes.
