you tube and uploading

A quick question for any of you who are computer-media inclined.

I've been trying to upload a short clip to youtube, but it keeps coming out all blocky and grainy, althought the sound is ok. I tried re-formatting the original clip using Streamclip (it was originally in mpeg-2) to the specs suggested by the site (mpeg-4, 30fps, etc). On my computer it played fine, but when uploaded it came out slightly less blocky than before, but with the sound out of track from the picture. I really know absolutely nothing about media files so i'm basically on trial and error here.

For now I am keeping the clip friends-only because it's looks pretty mediocre, and I wouldn't want to damage youtube's reputation by posting a grainy, badly tracked video to the general public.

So how does one properly prepare a file for posting? Any thoughts?
