On our recent trip through Peterborough and Ottawa:
i) There must be much money coming into Peterborough now, as there's new stores and specialty boutiques are going in all over the place. And in the coutryside, new houses are going up and old houses are having (sometimes hideous looking) additions put on them. Just a few years back I wrote about how these areas seemed static, but it's not true anymore. It's sad, but I can see much of it becoming unrecognizable in a decade or so.
ii) In contrast to peterborough, Bancroft and some of the other small norhern towns are looking more sad and run-down with time, both inside and outside of buildings. There seem to be very few young or working-age people there anymore. Is this what greying of society will look like?
iii) Gettign Dave to go canoeing with me at Silent Lake was fun. Just like the first time I canoed, he thought the boat looked tippy, but found out that it was actually very stable. There's a section of the lake there in which no trace of civilization can be seen or heard, which must have looked like it did to the indians and settlers.
iv) Ottawa is much more modest about its monuments and museums than D.C.
v) In my family, I think the main way we relate to each other is detailed storytelling about past events. My dad in particular is very good at telling us about things in such a way that is detailed, entertaining, accurate, and non-rambling. Dave pointed this out to me after our visit, and it was something I had never really noticed until now.
