government reform

I was pleased to read last night about our federal government finally setting fixed election terms of 4 years. One of the biggest abuses in our system has been that a PM can call an election at any time that suits him, such as when the opinion polls are in his favour or one of the opposition parties is in dissaray. Chretien used that tactic twice and kept himself in power way past his expriry date as an effective leader.

This refrom, along with attempts at reforming our long-outdated Senate (which, not surprisingly, are currently stalled in the Senate), are the few things that I like about Harper and the Conservatives.

harper, senate, politics
